Ah, that's probably it.

I'm really fascinated by this use of the apostrophe, where it seems to function similar to a colon or emdash:

> Find out all you can about your prospects before you call on them' their general living conditions, wealth, profession, hobbies, friends and so on

(another example)

>Tell the person who opens the door frankly and briefly what you have come for' it will get her on your side

Edit: also find this spelling of Nobel prize interesting:

> he has actually won the Nobel Prices

Balancing will be a nightmare I guess, or just dont do it. Nice idea for the advanced user but I would not let my parents fiddle around with lose 18650 cells for the sake of their house burning down.

I see a niche application but personally hope they get it to market and make it compatible with Shimano. My double sized battery is a frankenbattery: pcb from original with custom printed case fitting onto the original attachment device using the batteries from two original batteries. Measured and balanced of course. Safety is "meh" I guess because DIY. I'd like to replace it with something more properly designed.

I did my masters thesis on how to balance batteries with very little information on each individual battery a-priori! Unfortunately I didn’t get to do experimental stuff because it was the middle of Covid, I only had simulation data. You can do some interesting things, though I wonder how many issues we missed/avoided by working only in simulation.

Edit: here’s the publication if you’re curious: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S240589632...

Edit-edit: wow I got two citations!!! Never thought anyone would read my paper, that’s amazing.

Another interesting dynamic -- it may hard to tell if some tool is fast enough during early evaluations. I believe clickup was fast when we first tried it, but now that we have lots of tasks in it, it's slowed down. This could just be my poor memory though.

Have you checked out Linear (https://linear.app)?

I haven't! Will have to try them out, thanks!

I'm with you on #2, but even more than that, I'd rather live in a world in which detrimental laws are easier to change/fix...
pinkmuffinere · 3 days ago
Ya, that's fair, and very noble of you. I think this sort of thing is often the divide between engineering and politics. Engineers want to do the thing. Politicians want to make it easier to do the thing. I realize those are loose definitions, and I'm just some internet guy, but I like my definitions. As you get promoted, you move away from engineering, and further into politics. Personally I don't have the patience for much politics, even though i recognize that it is good and important.

All that to say -- I think you should be promoted :)

So cannot be used on a ship. Bummer.

Our sea-faring ancestors wouldn't be happy with this clock.

TIL there’s no gravity on ships. That’s why they float.

pinkmuffinere commented on Croatian freediver held breath for 29 minutes   divernet.com/scuba-news/f... · Posted by u/toomanyrichies

The body doesn't notice a lack of oxygen. Hence the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning or air without o2 etc, as you won't notice o2 lacking. What you notice is co2 buildup, and as long as you keep breathing that's not happening.

When freediving, you can't really avoid it. What you learn however is how to deal with it. Control your diaphragm when it wants to start breathing, as the spasms are wasted energy. It's mostly a mind thing. With simple exercises (co2 tables) and just getting used to the feeling, it took my quite a short time to reach 5 minutes.

One "trick" btw is hyper ventilating. But DONT DO IT! It get rids of lots of co2 in your blood stream / lungs, so it takes a bit longer for the co2 buildup. But you need that buildup. Even though it's painful, that's your only signal as to how you're doing and which you kinda calibrate against. Especially when diving, hyper ventilating before can make it so you suddenly go unconscious before you felt the urge to surface.

pinkmuffinere · 5 days ago
Wow, TIL hyperventilating increases the danger! My brothers and I used to compete against each other in swimming pools, and we'd always hyperventilate at the beginning, thinking this 'got the oxygen in'. In any case, it definitely helped. Glad we never got into trouble this way.

My personal record is ~3:30, but I'm pretty sure I could go well past that if we had practiced instead of just competing.

pinkmuffinere commented on Do Things That Don't Scale (2013)   paulgraham.com/ds.html... · Posted by u/bschne

This is a great article! My cofounders and I read it when we were first starting our business, and it significantly impacted the decisions we make, usually for the better. But don’t forget to scale at some point!! For example, we’re still doing our own bookkeeping and tax filing. When we started it was simple and it was a “thing that doesn’t scale” which we could still do. But at this point it’s a waste of time. We’re finally outsourcing it, probably a year later than we should have. I think we overindexed on Paul’s advice a bit. Which, to be clear, is still really really good advice, just don’t take it too far.

Edit: business is mydragonskin.com
