I would point out that for many people the cost of paying for childcare during work hours is comparable to the income generated from said work. Those people have essentially no incentive to work unless they want to avoid their kids.

Even if it's a wash dollar wise, staying employed often means you get healthcare and retirement benefits AND the career progression that ideally comes with long term stable employment. Trying to hop back on the treadmill after a 5-10 year absence often has a huge opportunity cost on your lifetime earnings.

Who in the US profits the most from Alfafa exports to these countries?
whinenot · 2 years ago
It's illegal to grow alfalfa in Saudi Arabia. That's why Fondomonte Arizona was created by the Saudis to grow alfalfa in the unregulated and easily paid off state of Arizona.[0]

This is basically classic arbitrage. Water in the American West is badly mispriced, so ranchers in China, Japan and Saudi Arabia are essentially buying this water for a very low price because their own water price is very high.

I'm hoping there is eventually enough outrage in these areas to change policy. Especially in California, where they are forcing people to rip up their lawns and trying to guilt folks into feeling horrible if they take a shower a minute too long, meanwhile they're doing nothing about what is actually the biggest cause of the problem.

whinenot · 2 years ago
At least the farmers have to pay something. At least one company gets all the water it can for free in California.[0] Not a bad deal for a bottled water company!

I've thought about this quite a bit. I'm a big fan of the record label Bear Family, a German label that specializes in releasing boxsets from R&B/Rock&Roll/Country artists from the 20's-70's. Want to hear every song The Carter Family ever recorded in their original incarnation? They have a 12 CD boxset for you! They generally do this be acquiring the original master tapes from the labels, which often include a lot of previously unreleased songs or alternate takes, and remastering them.

Hip-Hop probably has a higher percentage of this material than almost any other genre, especially once you get to the mixtape/blog era. Unfortunately, most of this material was only released in unofficial forms, often on low-quality MP3s and often with some random dude shouting over the intro. A lot of these tracks were also recorded over unlicensed beats/samples, so even if clean recordings were available official release would be impossible.

That's the killer, right there. For example, the Beastie Boys album Paul's Boutique probably could not be released today as it samples an incredible number of other artists.[0]

whinenot commented on Disney’s Taylor Swift Era   stratechery.com/2023/disn... · Posted by u/todsacerdoti

Her music isn't that hard to identify, even if you don't listen to it. It has a country-folk song structure, and a simple rhyme scheme. Listen to a few songs and you'll see what I mean.

Meanwhile, I'm coming from the other side - I'm a musician and I've been wondering why is it I don't care much for the music of the biggest pop star on the planet? Usually when it comes to the "pop tarts" as I call them, they have something I like.

Not so with Taylor Swift.

I've listened to all her top hits. I've tried using AI to find songs I might like based off of other music I like. I've basically come up empty-handed. If there's a song where the music is interesting, it's ruined with her vocals or her simplistic rhyme schemes (I really find her rhyme schemes super annoying!).

The most interesting song she has is Shake It Off. The use of a saxophone in modern pop music is welcome and I find the repetition in lyrics better than her usual rhyme schemes. No surprise it was co-written by Max Martin.

Ahh, the halcyon days of damn near every 80's Top 40 hit.

I wonder if it is partially lip syncing. Apparently when Celine Dion was performing nightly in Vegas she mixed lip syncing in to her performances to give her voice a break.

(I don’t have a source on that, just something I remember hearing years and years ago)

Enrique Iglesias was called out by Howard Stern for crappy vocals in his concert 23 years ago (good lord!).[0] Enrique explained that they overdubbed some of his songs so much in concert that you couldn't tell he was deliberately singing off key, that is until someone gave Howard Stern a copy of the mic feed.

Maybe not even acrobatic flying training but glider training. Pilots with glider experience are some of the best performers in emergencies.
whinenot · 2 years ago
Sully's 'Miracle on the Hudson' is (largely?) attributed to his skill as a glider pilot.[0]

What does it mean for the trust and safety team to be "healthy"? It's such a non-answer to any possible question.

Less bots and troll farms, perhaps? That may also be a consequence of overall user activity dropping like a stone.

This crackdown is targeted at the Middle Kingdom. With the pandemic behind us and Russia at war, the political environment is finally right to turn this on. It can be considered an escalation in the cold war/trade wars

Don't forget the drug war. Miami wasn't built up just for local Floridians.
