realistically you can't ban computers for home work as you dont control the environment. and as for banning them for exams that may work for most of the humanities math chemistry and physic, but good luck trying to teach a computer science degree without computers, or graphic design, or any of a number of of programs that are reliant on them if you want student to be competent with standard tools of their trad which are on computers. audio engineering computer video editing computers

Outside of distance learning - I think computers are very rarely used for CS exams in my, albeit dated, experience.

I've generally had good experiences with the various compressed X11-like tools. One example is x2go, but there are a few.

I've heard people say "people want vehicles the size of tanks" in discussions like this but I've never heard "I want a vehicle the size of a tank" although that person exists.

It seems like a different world but before the pandemic if you wanted to buy a compact car you would go to the dealer and find out they don't have any new ones, you'll have to settle for used, they say factory washed out in a flood. Well they have 100 SUVs made in the same factory lined up that nobody wants to buy that are $7000 off.

As someone who lives in a city, I'm not sure what I'd do with a car that is smaller than a tank. If it's a small car then it's probably for local trips and super inconvenient to park / re-park / etc. I want a big car to comfortably fit my family, our outdoor toys, and maybe even tow something.

Even if I lived outside a city, what do I gain by driving a smaller car? Going from 35 to 55 mpg? Parking is plentiful and equally convenient for big cars these days.

As a C programmer, that's the worst FizzBuzz implementation ever. You're not supposed to special-case % 15, just

    bool m3 = !(i % 3);
    bool m5 = !(i % 5);
    if (m3) printf("Fizz");
    if (m5) printf("Buzz");
    if (m3 || m5) printf("\n");
You can turn in your visitor badge at the front desk, and they'll call you an Uber.

I think this person wants a space between Fizz and Buzz.
vostok commented on Light-based technique shows 90% accuracy in early prostate cancer detection   medicalxpress.com/news/20... · Posted by u/amichail

Dumb question: does "90% accuracy" mean - "of the cancers it detected, it was 90% correct"?

Or does it mean, "of all the patients who developed cancer, it detected 90% of them"?

Where the later is referring to the entire population, and the former is only about those detected.

vostok · a year ago
I really like the table of confusion as a way to look at this stuff. I find the terminology somewhat confusing and it's much easier for me to just look up the formulas.

That means 90% accuracy should mean (true_positive + true_negative)/(whole_population) == 90%.

Clear skin is the least of the problems with psoriasis. From their website:

    Bimzelx, alone or in combination with methotrexate, is indicated for the treatment of active psoriatic arthritis in adults who have had an inadequate response or who have been intolerant to one or more disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
In other words, it's for people with bad cases who don't respond well to other drugs. Keep in mind, other drugs often come with serious complications- constant use of topical steroids will thin your skin, and give you glaucoma if you develop it and use them near your eyes. Many biologics have even worse potential side effects.

On top of that, psoriatic arthritis is degenerative, if you're unlucky enough to get that too, so not treating it means not only constant pain, constant threat of skin infections from scabbing, but permanent joint damage.

I ended up on Taltz, another very expensive biologic, but the eli lily foundation covered almost all of the cost since my insurance wouldn't. Before then, I looked like an alcoholic, because my nose was constantly red and inflamed, and I didn't have anything safe to put on it- glaucoma runs in my family, and I wasn't brave enough to risk anything strong enough.

If that was the only problem, I might not have even gone the route of Taltz, but I was also developing it all over my body, and there wasn't much that was helping.

Assuming this is post-Obamacare, do you know why your insurance didn't cover it? I had this simplified model that insurance covers everything once you hit maximum out of pocket and I'd love to learn how that model breaks down in practice.
vostok commented on Is running a more efficient way to travel than walking?   joehxblog.com/is-running-... · Posted by u/freediver

Same here! Have you found a solution? I was pretty happy with 3 miles 3-4 times per week, 10 to 11 minute pace, but apparently for me that's pushing too hard according to zone training. I tried going much slower, and even then my HR raises more slowly, but eventually gets way up there. Alternating my slowest possible jog and walking has taken all the fun out of running for the time being.
vostok · a year ago
You cam just ignore the Zone 2 advice as a relatively new runner. It's more useful when you're running high mileage.

In the 80s in the UK we had milk delivered every morning in glass bottles by a huge fleet of electric vehicles. The empty bottles were left out, collected by the milkman, sterilised and reused.

vostok commented on Commuting time of more than 30 min one way linked to higher chance of depression   sciencedirect.com/science... · Posted by u/belltaco

one of the biggest losses with commuting is the amount of housework that then doesn't get done. A half hour commute one way is an hour of my life I spend sitting every day. I would gladly spend half an hour a day cleaning house etc. if it meant I had a spare half hour to do fun things, instead I get home with just enough time to eat, shower, watch an episode of something and sleep. That's the real killer to mental health I think. You come home to a house with chores piling up, so things don't feel like a home, and you cannot find the willpower (after some time) to continue doing those chores at the expense of free time.
vostok · 2 years ago
Is a 30 minute commute that bad? I feel like a lot of people mindlessly browse for 60 minutes a day at home. You could do that on your commute instead of at home and get housework done at home.
