> Lawyers finding problems and trying to stop things from happening instead of finding solutions. Security blocking things and not suggesting alternatives. IT blocking this or that instead of trying solve problems, etc.

I think these are clear signs of a dysfunctional organization. I want to associate that with company size (larger -> more bureaucratic, counter-mission nonsense), but I've also seen large companies that don't get caught in these pitfalls. My best guess to lay blame would be at inadequate, out of touch, need-to-be-fired B.o.D and upper and mid-management deadwood. These are the people that propagate such ineffective culture.

I will forever remember the head of IT at my org exclaiming in a meeting, "I'm not here to solve problems". Blew my mind at the time, but it's emblematic and representative of company culture as a whole.

TBF there are orgs at companies whose sole role is to play DEFENSE - lawyers, CSO etc… if they deem something too risky it IS their job to block it, and then it’s up to upper management to override them if the situation calls for it.

Now that said they should still try to advance the mission within that framework, and not be lazy.

Lower salaries and treating everyone like a cog.
twojobsoneboss · a year ago
Tech salaries have ALREADY fallen and tech workers have already been largely treated as cogs. Yes it could get even worse but I get why they’re taking their chances

Being unique is important if you actually want to dominate the market. A product like his has captured a piece of the pie, but someone with equal distribution can easily eat into that since he has no moat.
twojobsoneboss · a year ago
His moat is his price. And it absolutely is a moat because most bigger competitors would not bother competing in the segment with even lower prices, as there’d be no upside

Correction: These _investors_ have too much money

Actually it’s a step further: these _LPs_ have too much money

I did this too. After I got through the withdrawal, I basically found myself sitting at my desk and waiting to die.

Like, cause of tiredness, or not being able to focus, or sheer boredom? Which one, or something else?

This at its core is the problem with activism, be it left or right - what do you do once you 'solve' the cause you set out to solve?

The answer is very rarely "ride off into the sunset" - often its moving goalposts.

At FAANG and adjacent that’s closer to the bottom of the career ladder. A Sr. at FAANG is pulling in closer to 350-400 TC. Staff, PE, and above will go significantly higher.
twojobsoneboss · 2 years ago
Well yeah that’s what I said… my main point was that unless you job hop into a faang, you’re quickly at the ceiling

And once you’re in a faang, there’s no higher to go

I'm actually on my 9th employer and its surprising the difference - they pay people well, very few contractors, no outsourcing, constructive feedback, encouragement for internal mobility. Every other place was the opposite.
twojobsoneboss · 2 years ago
Good employers exist. It’s crazy the number of people who get burned a couple of times and declare the industry is sheet and they have to do their own thing or their life is doomed

The other point specifically for devs is how interviewing is such a different skill to normal work. The people with the best careers are almost always interviewing. If you constantly using that muscle you get really good. The guy I know who stayed in the same role for 15 years and got laid off is screwed because he's a great developer but doesn't know any of that stuff.

Isn’t there a very real cap of say 200-225k for senior level regardless of where you go tho?

After that would be faang which itself is the endgame except (in some cases) jumping between faangs could get you more

I work at one that is definitely not megacap, nor do we pay at the top of the market, and that’s below our range for senior, which is more like $300k-500k, depending on specialty and geographic area. Staff is more like $500-700k.

Crazy, that’s approaching OpenAI pay… is it in the AI area?
