Question: why do you give the device access to the internet?
topikk · 2 months ago
Sounds like the parent(s) use it as well

There is no recourse except not to play. The end user has no choice. Sounds like a dictatorship.

Sounds like a platform that will wither away and die. Glassdoor users are emboldened by anonymity and know exactly what happens to people who put that kind of information on Facebook or LinkedIn next to their real name.

I have irrational anger towards := assignment operator, probably because of Pascal course in high school.

Interesting if anyone else have such stories regarding language syntax and features.

I also have this irrational anger, but as a result of PL/SQL. It's also an objectively hideous operator that is inconvenient to type.
topikk commented on Homes “unaffordable” in 99% of nation for average American   cbsnews.com/news/homes-fo... · Posted by u/paulpauper

The title here on hackernews is wrong. Given their definition of unaffordable these homes are "unaffordable" for the "average" American in 99% of 575 counties.

But! there are over 3000 counties in the US. This is not even close to the meaning of "unaffordable in 99% of the nation..."

People might not like hearing it, but homes are in fact affordable if you don't choose to live in an overpopulated metro. And even then homes are affordable if you're not buying one that's being flipped with a few panels of drywall that you could've installed yourself.

And before you say, but you need to make good money still so the average American still can't do this! There are good starter homes on my street that sell for 5-10,000 dollars. That is within reach of a vast majority of americans.

Please tell me where there are good homes for $5-10K. I live in a LCOL city and a completely clapped out house in a very bad neighborhood is still $100K. There are fewer than 10 houses cheaper than than in my entire city, and they all look like they needed to be torn down long ago. A decent, no-frills or style condo starts north of $200K.

I've been listening to Linux enthusiasts say this for 25+ years. Somehow I don't think ChromeOS was what they were envisioning.

I spend a LOT of time sharpening my axe and can't imagine why anyone would choose to use an unsharpenable hatchet with a stubby handle.

A better push would be to prevent the food industry from poisoning us with ultra-processed food and corn syrup. Having food regulation would go a long way in preventing obesity and many other negative health outcomes.
topikk · 3 years ago
No one solution is going to reverse the obesity epidemic. Better food labeling, ingredient regulations, health education for all age groups, cost of living reduction, food desert reductions, and likely many more things will need to be addressed if we hope to see noticeable changes.

coincidentally we have a lot of diseases that have skyrocketed in the last 50 years.

Yes Perhaps it’s not plastic itself but what plastic enables.

As usual, its difficult to nail these attributions down for a long time. Look at arsenic-containing green wallpaper, leaded gasoline, asbestos, and CFCs. They were all "fine" and widely-used until it was obvious that they were terrible.

Why do we need thinner laptops? You can hardly work on any of the current models today, which their almost zero height keys. We need better keyboards and not thinner laptops.

> You can hardly work on any of the current models today

Tell that to the millions of people who work on them daily without issue.

Honestly I am surprised that the demand for Raspberry Pis is this high. Where are all these Pis going?
topikk · 3 years ago
They're amazingly powerful for the money. Prior to the shortages they were great for retro game emulation, little linux boxes for fun/kids/specific uses, home automation, whole-network ad filtering, etc etc.
