I have been thinking about closing my Github account and moving all my code to gitweb on one of my personal domains. I'm tired of the social/popularity contest aspect of Github and just want to write and publish code that I find interesting. I also want more control and I don't want my code used for AI research like co pilot. I thought about trying source hut, or something similar, but I feel it will end-up just like github once it gets more users.

Has anyone else setup a simple gitweb server on a personal domain? If so, how did it turn out?

Nobody cares about your code.

The answer is scheduled C-sections and if you haven't read it, Atul Gawande's 2006 New Yorker article on why they've become so common is good read: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2006/10/09/the-score

After watching The Business of Being Born, Gawande's article was really helpful in understanding why things are done the way they are.

Vegan sources are ALA, not EPA or DHA. ALA has no documented positive impact on human health.
top_kekeroni_m8 · 3 years ago
You can buy vegan EPA/DHA sources, google it. But I guess research is not something you do.

The difference between being a vegetarian and being a vegan is that the latter avoids using any animal products, no matter how trivial the amount.

Glyphosate doesn’t make vegetables non-vegan, the animal fat used in its sprayable formulations does that. Vegetables and grains come with a slight coating of animal fat that is then mixed in with whatever food is made using those ingredients.

No, the definition of veganism clearly states:

"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable"

The important part being "as far as is practicable". Nobody is a perfect vegan, as that is close to impossible, but you can get very close and prevent a lot of unnecessary suffering and lower your carbon footprint.

My proposition is that in Europe, if you're making tier 3 salaries, your life is actually shit. You're working for American companies with shitty work life balances, "we're making the world a better place" hellholes that layoff hundreds of people whenever there's a chance.

Working full remote for a nice European company with proper work life balance and tier 2 salaries is way better.

top_kekeroni_m8 · 4 years ago
In my experience, working for US companies has actually been great, they're much better managed and operated than their EU counterparts. I don't mind the 5x higher pay than my local engineers as well :)

Unrelated but I heard it's possible to rename c:\ to /usr/bin or something, depending on your usage. I personally wouldn't mind renaming it to ~/<user-name> and be able to use some of my dotfiles in Windows.

It's possible, but 90% of software will break because of this lol

For context, I will actually be making substantially more - at least one order of magnitude - wherever I land.

https://stockevents.app

~5000$/mo

An investment tracking app with a unique view of things (events).

Started just before corona, since I needed something like this myself. Turns out a lot of people were searching for something like that. The fact that many other investment tracking apps are either ad ridden, slow or have a bad ux helped as well.

Technical:

- App flutter

- Backend go

- Database postgres

- Hosted Kubernetes on GCP

Looks like it got the HN hug of death, getting 502 error.
