From what I've read, he's tied up RAM manufacturers through 2029. That's a lot of quartely earnings reports for many firms in the economy where they watch consumer spend come to a screeching halt.
thway15269037 · 6 days ago
Now I'm curious: does this situation classify as force-majeure for a major firms? "Hey, you know, actually our entire consumer base just disappeared overnight. Crazy, huh?". And will various governments have to intervene to save them when/if that happens.

Not taking into account that they all be busy handing money to openAI, at least someone somewhere has to notice that something is very wrong.

No, the issue here is that the HDMI 2.1 NDA is so strict that releasing an open source implementation is forbidden no matter how much you pay them. AMD has access to the specs, they've implemented it in hardware and in their closed source Windows driver, but they're not allowed to add it to their open source Linux driver.

Nvidia does support HDMI 2.1 on Linux since their driver is closed source (but that causes its own problems). Maybe AMD could compromise by releasing a minimal binary blob which only exposes the HDMI 2.1 implementation and nothing else.

And what if they just do it anyway? What are they going to do, sue them? Make them scrub every git repository on the planet?

With some modifications, yes. Boot2docker and boot2podman were based on tinycorelinux.

Both are deprecated though. And both say something unexpected on their repositories: one suggests you to use Docker Desktop (what?!), the other to try Fedora (what?!!). Am I taking crazy pills?

And just like that, you no longer have a good benchmark. Scrapers / AI developers will read this comment, and add 5-legged dogs to LLM's training data.
thway15269037 · 13 days ago
So much this. People don't realize that when 1 trillion (10 trillion, 100 trillion, whatever comes next) is at stake, there are no limits what these people will do to get them.

I will be very surprised if there are not at least several groups or companies scraping these "smart" and snarky comments to find weird edge cases that they can train on, turn into demo and then sell as improvement. Hell, they would've done it if 10 billion was at stake, I can't really imagine (and I have vivid imagination, to my horror) what Californian psychopaths can do for 10 trillion.

It’s really hard to understand today the level of hype around Java and OOP in the 90s. The fact Netscape changed the name from Livescript to JavaScript may be an indicator. This was also peak Sun, they were really driving the web in this era.
thway15269037 · 14 days ago
So if JavaScript was made on this day, today, it would be named AIScript? Got it. Totally hard to understand the level of hype.

When it eventually does, they'll just come up with something else. Nvidia got a taste of inflated prices from the Crypto and then AI, and they're not going to just let that go. If nothing exists they'll make something and hype it endlessly to try to keep this going.
thway15269037 · 15 days ago
Then I sure hope Nvidia completely ceases to exist, like SGI, who, ironically, was decimated by Nvidia and cheap consumer hardware.

So, when anyone will fork in? Call it MaxIO or whatever. I might even submit couple of small patches.

My only blocker for a fork to maintain compatibility and path to upgrade from earlier versions.

This is nauseating. I hope someone forks KDE into like KDElive or something so I could continue use X11 and not bother with piece of junk of Wayland.

The whole thing is a wrong way for free software and is being pushed by couple big corps out of their interests.

Now you can pretend you're an enterprise IT environment with arbitrary and ridiculous purchasing constraints!

But for real, that sucks. The alternatives -- much older, used RAM -- may not be very attractive, depending on what you're doing.

thway15269037 · a month ago
I had a simple proxmox/k8s cluster going, and fitting RAM for nodes was the last on my list. It was cheapo ol' DDR4.

Where I live price for my little cluster project gone up from around ~400 usd in july (for 5 node setup) to almost 2000 usd right now. I just refreshed page and it's up by 20% day-to-day. Welp. I guess they are going to stay with 8gb sticks for a while.

It would be an Adam Neumann moment. There’s no way OAI can IPO with its current financials.

Isn't it the whole point of current AI environment? "We can't, we shouldn't, yet we did and look at our stock".

I won't bet anything at it but the whole thing, the whole AI economy looks like a big YOLO, so taking another step further into this insanity is, well, just another step. Who knows, maybe next day Beff Jezos will IPO newly established company and somehow pull 1T IPO in 10 days of company existence. Wouldn't it be a sight?
