So there is censorship, you just think that it is good. That's fine! But you should own the position and justify it on its own terms instead of pretending that it doesn't count as censorship.
throwaway24778 · 24 days ago
Sure but filtering what you say is also a form of censorship. Swinging the term around like it's some form of morality is silly; anyone who isn't for a form of censorship is just a moron and an asshole. Or even worse: a liberal.

I just chaired a session at the FOCI conference earlier today, where people were talking about Internet censorship circumvention technologies and how to prevent governments from blocking them. I'd like to remind everyone that the U.S. government has been one the largest funders of that research for decades. Some of it is under USAGM (formerly BBG, the parent of RFE/RL)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Agency_for_Globa...

and some of it has been under the State Department, partly pursuant to the global Internet freedom program introduced by Hillary Clinton in 2010 when she was Secretary of State.

I'm sure the political and diplomatic valence is very different here, but the concept of "the U.S. government paying to stop foreign governments from censoring the Internet" is a longstanding one.

I suppose COPPA is a form of internet censorship we help children bypass?

Compared to the heavily subsidized subscriptions, I don't think API is sold at loss.

Also why would you create a throwaway for this question? Are you trying to rage bait?

> Are you trying to rage bait?

If you have to ask, it's probably not rage bait. I'm just too lazy to come up with a username.

Even besides this, do you feel such incredible existential hate/jealousy towards monkeys, baboons, gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, etc and want to see them wiped off the planet to extinction?

Or do you feel a type of connection to these animals and want to preserve them?

The AI doomer argument is so stupid. It is an eschatological religious idea for a mind based on scientism.

I also wouldn't doubt that most AI doomers hate one or both of their parents and the AI doomer mindset is a projection.

It seems pretty rational to get depressed if you spend any time watching humans interact with these things. We have brains for a reason. Projecting hate for parents seems like a you problem.

I don't know if you're aware but robots and chips are different things that require different expertise.
throwaway24778 · 25 days ago
It's still a completely farcical attitude. At this point it's just a matter of how many years it'll take for chinese manufacturing to outstrip western expertise with chips, too. Ten years? Five? Two?

Very exciting times to live through.

I don't it's particularly hard to figure it out: APIs have been particularly at risk of being exploited for negative purposes due the explosion of AI powered bots
throwaway24778 · 25 days ago
This trend well predates widespread use of chatbots.

They put no limits on the API usage, as long as you pay.

Here, they put limits on the "under-cover" use of the subscription. If they can provide a relatively cheap subscription against the direct API use, this is because they can control the stuff end-to-end, the application running on your system (Claude Code, Claude Desktop) and their systems.

As you subscribe to these plans, this is the "contract", you can use only through their tools. If you want full freedom, use the API, with a per token pricing.

For me, this is fair.

I don't and would never pay for an LLM, but presumably they also want for force ads down your throat eventually, yea? Hard to do if you're just selling API access.
