throwaway2203 commented on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?    · Posted by u/simonebrunozzi

Anna Karenina is a masterpiece of a novel. I highly recommend it as well.

I often jokingly mention that this is the first book that ever made me want to get married. While many now that the novel describes the tragic life and relationships of Anna, only those that read it will now that here is another, as important and positive story, about the love between Kitty and Levin.

That novel helped me understand love.

I suspect the demand for human creative output will shrink, as AI generated content will be so cheap and prevalent, even as it will only ever be an imitation of human art. The same way that most people eat terrible, flavorless tomatoes from the supermarket, instead of the harder to grow heirloom varieties.

But I don't think human creativity is going anywhere. Unless there is some breakthrough that moves it far beyond anything we've seen so far, AI will always be trailing behind us. Human creativity might become a more boutique product, like heirloom tomatoes, but there will always be people who value it.

There might be more creating it than there are those valuing it

Is the knowledge practical in any way? Or largely irrelevant in the day to day?

Is there a modern justification for such an onerous process? I am all for well trained professionals, but at some point people have to recognize gate keeping. Years of full time study is an impossible ask for many without external support.

My friends who studied for the Pakistan Civil Service exam told me you can get questions like:

When did Gen Musharraf visit India on so-and-so trip?

A) Oct 10th 2004 B) Oct 8th 2004 ...

(I made the answers up, but I distinctly remember the days being 2 days apart)

> The only way to check progress over slow hotel wifi was to look at the progress circle, which is also the cancel button. I was aware that every time I checked progress, I was one finger-spasm away from cancelling the whole download.

oooof

> Every app on Quest has to reinvent how buttons work, how a scroll view works, how far away from the user the content should be etc.. and every app works differently.

kinda shocked there's not a Material Components equivalent for Quest. I guess it's designed like a game system (where custom menus are standard), but that's a reinforcing loop. As long as there's no standard component system, it'll continue to be game-centric.

I'm actually not sure which button does what on the Quest. I usually click them all until something happens.

They were pretty nimble late 2000's, early 2010's.

This is pretty indefensible and indicates the results of this 'election' are likely fixed.
throwaway2203 · 2 years ago
It is known that they are, given the main opposition party's leader is jailed and they're not allowed to campaign.

> My thought is, unless gunmen are showing up at polling stations, what exactly is so urgent to discuss that people haven't already made up their minds about in 24 hours?

If they got blasted with misinformation 24/7 before election day, how much will those 24 hours help them make an informed opinion? It might stop last minute attempts at swaying the election. But it will not stop long running campaigns.

throwaway2203 · 2 years ago
Hearing from friends that there were a lot of last minute shenanigans like poll locations getting changed, candidates election symbols getting changed (important given the lack of literacy).

I've created just-tell-me [1] that summarizes youtube videos with ChatGPT. It's built with Deno, uses TypeScript and is deployed with Deno Deploy. It's open source, you can run it from CLI as well [2]

Pricing depends on the country but have addressed that in another comment! The privacy policy explains how we store data but will make this clearer and more upfront. I store recordings separately from user info in an S3 bucket and the database is hosted in digital ocean. Recordings are sent to OpenAI for ephemeral analysis and transcription.
throwaway2203 · 2 years ago
Can I export the recordings and the resulting (presumably text) diary?
