What the fuck? Are people taking "vibe coding" as a serious workflow? No wonder people's side projects feel more broken and buggy than before. Don't get me wrong, I "work with" LLMs, but I'd never merge/use any code that I didn't review, none of the models or tooling is mature enough for that.

Really strange how some people took a term that supposed to be a "lol watch this" and started using it for work...

don't forget about the insane amount of marketing around AI code companies and how they put "vibe coding" in front of everyone's face all the time.

You tell someone something enough times and they'll belive it

Ironically, just yesterday I had a situation that made me change my mind on some of this; it convinced me that the world isn't ready for "AI results" in search in their current form.

Imagine: an impulsive person, suddenly facing the need to change the ownership structure of their mortgage, worried they'll have to pay a lot for this. A person who doesn't really know first thing about it. They enter a query in Google; because of their lack of domain knowledge, the query is missing one word. Without that word, the query matches two related but distinct kinds of ownership structures. Results for both come, and then AI summary happily blends them together. The person sees an explanation, panics, and shouts my ear off about the bad situation they've been put in by a third party. I'm confused (I know a bit more about this, but not much); they show me the phone.

I'm staring dumbfounded, looking at a seemingly nonsensical AI summary. But it's not the text that made me pause in shock - it's the fact that the other person took it as gospel, and yelled it at me.

Garbage in, garbage out, as they say. The way I see it now, the biggest problem isn't the garbage out that sometimes comes out of LLMs. The problem is the "garbage in" - specifically, the garbage that passes for thinking and communication among most of human population. An LLM may reason 100% correctly - it won't help when user supplies "wrong figures" without realizing it, and then acts on answer without thinking.

The world is not ready for systems that indulge people in their bullshit.

While “silly” this is likely the next paradigm/abstraction for intent based pages.

You can imagine given 1,000,000 page views just how many experiments could be run. Basically our A/B tests start to resemble natural evolution and survival of the fittest more than decision trees.

However, something feels like it’s missing. I wonder what’s still yet to be built before we arrive at that future.

dartos · 8 months ago
I think that’d make for interesting experiments and fringe sites, I don’t really see like your average e-commerce site ever doing anything like that.

You’d want the A and B to be intentional, not automatically generated. Every VP thinks their idea for a feature will revolutionize the company.

You put into words something I've been struggling to describe for a long time. Gemini gives short, succinct responses with whatever information you need and minimal anything else. ChatGPT, Claude both fill text with mannerisms, formatting, etc.

I didn't realize just how big the difference was until I tested it.

"How do I clear a directory of all executable files on Debian?"

Gemini 2.0 Flash: (responses manually formatted)

find /path/to/directory -type f -executable -delete
Replace /path/to/directory with the actual path.
ChatGPT: (full link [1])

To clear (delete) all executable files from a directory on Debian (or any Linux system), you can use the find command. Here's a safe and effective way to do it:
    # [checkmark emoji] Command to delete all executable files in a directory (not recursively): [..]
    # [magnifying glass emoji] Want to preview before deleting? [..]
    # [caution sign emoji] Caution: [..]

Probably because both anthropic and openai were on the whole AGI train where they were trying to heavily personify their products.

Google never seemed to personify theirs, IIRC. They always presented their AI tools in a utilitarian way.

Or maybe you're really good at writing words?

If you use too many words, you’re not good at writing words.

And? Two wrongs don’t make a right.

There’s no “and.”

I’m just stating a fact. No discussion of wrong or right or whatever.

Just pointing out how there is no more rule of law in the US. Idk when exactly it disappeared, but it’s definitely not present anymore

I'm not here to prove anything to you, just to tell my story and share.

What do you want me to do, give you access to my works git repo?

dartos · 8 months ago
I asked if you would be willing to share your work and workflow.

You could say nothing. You could just say “I can’t, it’s for my job, but my workflow looks like this…” or something.

You could say you’re not comfortable sharing.

You could share a snippet and how you reached that result… idk anything.

But instead you went for some weird statement about flying and people writing articles.

Didn’t respond to any points in Dijkstra’s essay, just some platitudes.

Mmm why US specifically? The most overuse of livestock antibiotics is in India (and India has a lot of drug factories).
dartos · 8 months ago
really?

because of the current situation in the US...

So many arguing that "copyright shouldn't be a thing" etc., ad nauseam, which is a fine philosophical debate. But it's also the law. And that means ChatGPT et. al. also have to follow the law.

I really, really hope the multimedia-megacorps get together and class-action ChatGPT and every other closed, for-profit LLM corporation into oblivion.

There should not be a two-tier legal system. If it's illegal for me, it's illegal for Sam Altman.

Get to it.

dartos · 8 months ago
Sorry, but have you paid attention to the legal system in the states?

Large corporations and their execs live by different laws than the rest of us.

That’s how it is.

Anything is else is, unfortunately, a fiction in this country.

I long for the day when people don't try to pass off vapid generic advice for likes. Waste of bandwidth.

A bit cynical, no?
