I have mentioned this in a few comments: for my CS classes I have gone from a historical 60-80% projects / 40-20% quizzes grade split, to a 50/50 split, and have moved my quizzes from being online to being in-person, pen-on-paper with one sheet of hand-written notes

Rather than banning AI, I'm showing students how to use it effectively as a personalized TA. I'm giving them this AGENTS.md file:

https://gist.github.com/1cg/a6c6f2276a1fe5ee172282580a44a7ac

And showing them how to use AI to summarize the slides into a quiz review sheet, generate example questions with answer walk throughs, etc.

Of course I can't ensure they aren't just having AI do the projects, but I tell them that if they do that they are cheating themselves: the projects are designed to draw them into the art of programming and give them decent, real-world coding experience that they will need, even if they end up working at a higher level in the future.

AI can be a very effective tool for education if used properly. I have used it to create a ton of extremely useful visualizations (e.g. how twos complement works) that I wouldn't have otherwise. But it is obviously extremely dangerous as well.

"It is impossible to design a system so perfect that no one needs to be good."

How do you handle kids w/ a learning disability who can't effectively write well?

An open source campaign management app for TTRPGs. There are a ton out there, that are basically just fancy wikis. I'm working on one in Django for running my old school D&D game i'm starting back up this fall.

In my last week of funemployment before going back to work. I’m working on fun stuff like gardening, designing battle tech terrain in cad and building a web tool for solo roleplaying.

Nice to do something just for myself

The Cursor founders (technically the company is called Anysphere, Inc) are all young MIT grads. What they needed is a 40-year-old with a degree from Fitchburg State who could say "Woah, don't do that! It's not worth the long-term risk!"

Curtis Yarvin? Excuse me?

Jordan Peterson too. Putting Chomsky in the same sentence as those two is just insulting

I just want to say thanks for the minimum-contrast option: https://ghostty.org/docs/config/reference#minimum-contrast

I've grown so sick of tools/TUIs that output unreadable text (like Debian's ls that defaults to dark-blue-on-black for directories). I look forward to never manually theming a terminal app again!

This is great. I’m middle aged and I’ve definitely noticed my eyesight needs more and more help in the contrast dept

Interesting! Explains that even though I've used a laptop since 1992 to do school work because of my learning disabilities(Dysgraphia, mid-line problems, poor fine motor control) I still prefer to hand write my notes. Even if I never read them I noticed that just the act of doing them helps me remember things. I might not remember the source but I can remember the act of note taking. I've noticed the same thing with reading as well.

2019-2020 was also a big H1N1 (Spanish/Swine Flu) year, as were 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. Entirely possible that's what you remember reading about or getting. If COVID hadn't happened Spanish Flu would've been a big headline anyways; as it is, a lot of the people who think they got COVID before March 2020 probably actually had H1N1. Before then the case numbers are orders of magnitude higher for flu, but COVID was more transmissible and almost 10x more lethal, and so post-lockdown it dominated.

I remember going in for a physical Jan 2020 and my doctor talking about lot about the flu. He gave me the pneumonia vaccine and then was like oh there is this other thing but probably nothing to worry about…

A couple of months ago, in the company I work, there was a talk from HR, where they explained how to make a good CV (the company is firing lots of people). She say: "if you have experience in programming C, you can writing just that, or, if you have lots of experience in C, is customary to write ``C++ Experience'' "

Sooo... yeah... I should definitely change company!
