I actually would love this to be built in to a language/compiler. A lot of times when I’m building a single-threaded program but I’m using libraries written by other people. These libraries don’t know whether they are being incorporated into programs with single thread or not. So they either take the performance penalty of assuming multi-threaded (the approach by std::shared_ptr) or they give callers choice by making two implementations (Rust Arc and Rc). But the latter doesn’t actually work because this needs to be a global setting, not just a decision made at a local call site. It won’t work if such a library is a transitive dependency.

Zig supports this. If you compile with -fsingle-threaded, operations on mutexes turn into nops, atomics become simple loads/stores, etc.

300 ms is a long time on a computer, definitely. Just, the autistic side of me has to speak up when it’s wildly unrealistic glorification of the past.

Keypress duration is likely much less than 300 ms, top Google result claims 77 ms on average. And that’s down and up.

I see it being in cache already as sort of game playing, i.e. we can say anything is instant if we throw a cache in front of it. Am I missing something about caching that makes it reasonable? (I’m 37, so only 18 around that time and wouldn’t have had the technical chops to understand it was normal for things to be in disk cache after a cold boot)

do_not_redeem · a month ago
Okay, let's say the cache is cold and you're on an old clunky spinning rust 5400 RPM hard drive. Do the math. How long will it take, worst case, for the platter to spin to where calc.exe is stored?

OMZ is still easier to set up consistently. That’s why we use it.

If the concern is the bloat of OMZ then make FMZ - fast my zsh - that is just as quick to set up and doesn’t add “bloat”?

I won't spoil the article, but if you read to the end you'll find out what this "FMZ" project is called.

This would be a fine nonfiction piece if they hadn’t grafted their thinly-veiled opinion about LLMs into the middle of it in such an off-putting, awkward way. I guess that was the reason why they wrote the folksy nonfiction bits in the first place, though.
do_not_redeem · 2 months ago
It was an offhand 20 words out of a 5000 word article and a very pertinent example. I guess the question is, why were you not bothered by the negative opinion about instant coffee or particleboard or malls or Tinder or McNuggets, but hearing anything negative about LLMs is worth singling out to complain about?

You mean, on a third-party website that currently happens to have a capture of the page outside of the Zig team's control, one which can go down at any time?
do_not_redeem · 2 months ago
The site is open source and the commits are still there. No need to be so dramatic.

It's still in process. Today's update (KB5070311) added the following:

> Keyboard settings for "character repeat delay and rate", and "cursor blink rate", have moved from Control Panel to Settings.

do_not_redeem · 2 months ago
To be fair, Windows 8 only came out in 2012, so they haven't had that much time to finish the settings migration. But they're making good progress. If they keep up this pace of moving 2 settings per month, they should be able to finish by 2053.

I wonder what tools the Zig team has to deal with trolls like this.

Is the zig name or logo trademarked? What about the mascot he's using as his github picture?

They're violating the terms of the MIT license as mentioned in the article, so maybe Zigtools has legal standing.

As for lying about no AI, being an asshole isn't illegal, so no angle there.

Any other ideas I missed?

Congratulations on the move!

> Thank you to the Forgejo contributors who helped us with our issues switching to the platform, as well as the Codeberg folks who worked with us on the migration

I'd love to see a writeup about these problems/solutions at some point.

Brave has adblocking built into blink itself, so you no longer need to trust a 3rd party browser extention.

I think gorhill is far more trustworthy than a whole new browser based on crypto.

Am I right to assume that they simply implemented AirDrop without discussing with Apple?
do_not_redeem · 3 months ago
Reading between the lines, it seems like Google is playing a bit of chess here. Reminds me of the Beeper Mini stunt, except this time by a trillion-dollar company they can't just sweep under the rug.

> we welcome the opportunity to work with Apple to enable “Contacts Only” mode in the future.

> I applaud the effort to open more secure information sharing between platforms and encourage Google and Apple to work together more on this.

Your move, Apple.
