I know some people get annoyed at this because of the unspoken obligation to keep it going, but more than once I've been in a drive thru line where the person in front of me paid for my food. Whenever it's happened, I've tried to do the same for the next person. Just little things like that where I realize some stranger who has never met me wants me to have a better day mean a lot.

I have been trying for a long time to find a way to play my PC games from my couch without dragging my desktop into the living room.

Steam Link works okay but is still noticeable for some games. Docking a Steam Deck wasn’t powerful enough. Running a long HDMI cable isn’t feasible in my current living space. So I’m very intrigued to have this lower powered cube sit under my TV for when I just want to do some couch co-op or play something more casual to wind down at night.

Moonlight/Sunshine is a great steam link alternative if you have a tv box (like an apple tv or similar) that has the Moonlight app available. I'm able to run both steam and non steam games pretty well.

What book club series did you watch?

San Diego Machine Learning! They're a meetup but did remote discussions for this one.

Everyone praises this book but it was way too dry for me to get through. I have the print edition so maybe I'll give it another try

I struggled with it as well, and the experience was made worse by the echo chamber of people around me insisting it was the greatest secret to being successful in software architecture. Who knows if they actually read it.

What helped was to watch a youtube series run by a book club where they actively discussed and took notes together on it. It cut through a lot of the dry writing and got to the point of what the author tries to say. I didn't come out of it feeling more confident, but if I think of something relevant I vaguely remember from the book, I know I can pull it out as a reference at any time.

I have found myself worrying about global politics, climate change, microplastics and whole lot of other things. Things that I have no control over. Don’t get me wrong it’s good to be informed about these things but constant influx of such information is not helping anyone. It’s critical to regulate what we consume on web because our brains have a tendency to think about what we consume. Our thoughts get influenced by what information we are consuming. Seriously ditch the feed that someone else is curating for you!

RSS is all you need https://rohanrd.xyz/posts/why-rss/

P.S. I haven't been able to ditch hacker news like I wanted to.

Freespace was the (un?)official successor. Freespace 2 was incredible and I’d be willing to bet it holds up to this day.

Nowadays we have the modern version of Elite Dangerous, but its flight mechanics are too close to aeronautic flight mechanics to compare to Descent.

With mods, Freespace and Freespace 2 are still especially awesome.

My pup knows that when I say “thank you” in a certain tone of voice that it’s nearing the end of a meeting. She’ll wait patiently the whole time until I say it, then perk up. And she gets annoyed when anything prolongs the meeting after that signal, and start getting restless because she knows the meeting should be over.

My dog does this too!

Love The Far Side. “Went to market” with the missing toe had me in tears when I first saw it!

My sisters dog will bark incessantly at the TV if there are specific animals on the screen, such as horses and elephants. Surprisingly, cats and dogs are allowed.
telman17 · 2 years ago
My aunt’s dog does the same! Horses are not allowed nor are people swimming in any way on TV. The dog also seems to prefer when the actors have British accents.

What a great story. We have a 3 year old Bernedoodle who resembles a walking sheep on stilts and is around 90 pounds. It is always a joy to take her out at pet allowing public places and see people’s faces just light up when they see her trotting around, tail wagging. She is friendly but also doesn’t greet strangers unless we initiate it. Never had to train her for that, she just always seems to know my comfort levels.
