On iPhone X, you can hold the power button and volume up for 5 seconds and it will lock the phone, disable Face ID, and force entering your passcode to unlock.
tehmaco · 7 years ago
You can also tap the power button five times in a row, which brings up the emergency screen (Power Off, Medical ID, SOS call), but also disables face recognition until a pin unlock has happened.

I don't use anything but web mail (Fastmail) since 2002. I do my banking and email in one browser and my general browsing in a very locked down Firefox (Many about:config hacks, uBlock Origin, Decentraleyes, Webmail Ad Block, Privacy Badger, and No Coin) that blocks about everything save the actual content. I also run a Pi-hole. Keeping your actions compartmentalised keeps your privacy better controlled. Nothing is perfect, but keeping things separated is generally a better idea than not doing so.

If you're not aware of it, you might want to look into Qubes[0], it's an OS that uses virtualisation tech to compartmentalise applications from each other (and the host OS). So you can use your browser of choice for all uses, just in different VMs configured to retain/discard data as you want.

I've watched it 20 years ago so I don't remember seeing such scene. I do remember Gene Hackman explaining about cages when his hideout is shown though.
tehmaco · 8 years ago
It's in the scene in the hotel lift - Hackman gets Smith to remove various things, and stuffs the trackers in a foil crisp (aka chip) packet, and the techs lose tracking on them.

You just answered a question I pondered earlier today as I watched the MacOS X demo I linked to above somewhere. And that is to the question if a native speaker would recognize the synthetic speech as unnatural. As the video progresses it lands on international languages such as Arabic and Chinese among other things. To my ear and my best memory of how those languages sound the synthetic versions came out pretty convincing. It made me think about a concept I've had about a test to language recognition: if a native speaker were to speak gibberish in their native tongue would an outsider to the language recognize it as gibberish or assume it was vocabulary in that language.

There's a short film on YouTube that explores that idea:

It's a very strange experience hearing it!

Note that the error rate is not proportional to the amount of RAM, it is proportional to the physical volume of the ram chips. (The primary mechanism that causes errors are highly energetic particles hitting the chips, the chance that this happens is proportional to the volume of the chips.) This means that the error rate per bit goes down as density goes up.
tehmaco · 9 years ago
Cosmic rays causing the errors has got me thinking about if the error rates vary with the time.

Do you get more/less errors when it's day time (due to the Sun)? Does the season affect it (axial tilt means you're more/less "in view" of the galactic core)?

Ubuntu would be the smartest choice. It's got the best support of any Linux distro, and you can install Steam on it just fine with the deb.
tehmaco · 9 years ago
I've been using Steam on Linux Mint for a few years, and generally everything Just Works(tm).

51% of Americans earn $30,000 or less a year [1] (yes, you read that right - and you wonder why populist candidates are so popular and why the anti-rich people sentiment is so strong...).

I wish Musk hasn't said that he's not going to make a car that's cheaper than $35,000. I know he wants to add Level 5 Autopilot and whatnot by default on these cars, but he really needs to get to the $20,000 range at least. That's where the real mainstream is, and not just in the U.S. either. EVs will go mainstream when they cost $10,000-$20,000.

It may take another decade to get there, but if Musk doesn't build such a car others will. It's just that I would've preferred a Tesla car to put pressure on the quality of the competitors as well.

It looks like there'll be further models after the Three:

"I'm super excited about being able to produce a car that most people can afford," Musk said. "And there will be future cars that are even more affordable down the road."

"With something like the Model 3, it's designed such that roughly half the people can afford the car," he continued. "With fourth generation and smaller cars and what not, we'll ultimately be in the position where almost everyone will be able to afford the car."

True. Anyone know if this new IP law allows the gov to do this? I.e. if they tried to prosecute and it came to light that the logs were obtained using a MITM attack, would the evidence be nullified?
tehmaco · 9 years ago
It would probably come under the "Equipment Interference" section, which legalises hacking of devices.

Is it better to go with a VPN service, or rent your own server and DIY?
tehmaco · 9 years ago
I've got a couple of cheap VPS's with OpenVPN installed and the bandwidth/latency is best described as "intermittent", as there'll be a lost of hosts sharing it on the low end ones.

NordVPN is one I keep seeing talked about, so I'll be looking into them this weekend :)
