tekacs commented on Japan law opening phone app stores to go into effect   www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/e... · Posted by u/shlip

I really hope that Japanese developers take advantage of this situation to show off at least some of the creativity that's possible when we're not quite as limited by Apple's restrictions. I don't doubt that from a 'security' point of view, Apple is going to continue to enforce all sorts of things that make it wildly more difficult to use the supercomputer in our pockets than I would like. But nonetheless, perhaps this gives a bit of room to be a little more illustrative.

I know that from time to time people have argued that jailbreaking should have resulted in more creativity if it were going to, but with that tiny, tiny market, it's hard to believe that many developers, relatively speaking, would have been able to go hard at building something custom and impressive. With this larger market, hopefully folks will get the chance to do that now.

I haven't done a ton of testing due to cost, but so far I've actually gotten worse results with xhigh than high with gpt-5.1-codex-max. Made me wonder if it was somehow a PEBKAC error. Have you done much comparison between high and xhigh?
tekacs · 4 days ago
I found the same with Max xhigh. To the point that I switched back to just 5.1 High from 5.1 Codex Max. Maybe I should’ve tried Max high first.

Anyone else experiencing weird rendering in mobile Firefox where the text is partly off screen to the left?
tekacs · 6 days ago
Mobile Chrome on Android too.

In my case, stupid use cases for a folding phone: unfolding the screen helped it render in desktop layout...

Picking the 'desktop site' / request desktop site button in the ... menu also works though!

Based on other HN rules thus far, I tend to think that this just results in more comments pointing out that you're violating a rule.

In many threads, those comments can be just as annoying and distracting as the ones being replied to.

I say this as someone who to my recollection has never had anyone reply with a rule correction to me -- but I've seen so many of them over the years and I feel like we would fill up the screen even more with a rule like this.

Hmm... I sort of would've preferred it was JUST a button. I wonder if you could even make it perpetually powered by body heat + buffer battery if it's ONLY job was to emit a couple packets over BLE with some burned in ID that you save on the watch. I don't know how efficient peltier elements are going to be on such a small area, but the cold side would be attached to a big metal ring, which feels like an adequate heat sink. (Peltier elements work on heat differential right? Not an expert.)

I know they mentioned that they thought of making this just a watch app, but didn't like the two-handed button press or raise to wake gesture. Why not just optimize for removing the gesture entirely? The microphone has to be better on a full size watch on your wrist vs the tiny ring further away on your finger.

This hits the same nerve in me as those single-use vapes with screens, except you can't harvest the battery out of this one.

This reminds me of Pebble Core. Does anyone but me remember that?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/getpebble/pebble-2-time...

It was one of the devices I was most excited about way back when, and I'd still love to see it – button, headphone jack, running Android. I would love a headless (and thus longer-charge-for-smaller-device) Android device like that again.

tekacs commented on Apple to beat Samsung in smartphone shipments for first time in 14 years   sherwood.news/tech/apple-... · Posted by u/avonmach

Samsung has good hardware, but their software is really mediocre, at best. Many of their devices are laggy and slow down further after some updates.

This is the case even on high-end devices. Our 12-month-old Galaxy Tab is slower than a 7-year-old Pixel. Hard to understand.

Plus, they make really odd tweaks to the UI, such as adding a permanent button overlay that clashes with most hamburger icons in websites and apps. This drives novice users insane.

If you wanna ship a custom Android, at least get it right. Otherwise, just stick to stock. Sony does this really well: https://developerworld.wpp.developer.sony.com/open-source

Odd. I've had the Z Fold 5 and now 7 and the last few years' worth of Samsung firmware has been excellent for me. Perhaps they build 'for' their flagships and let devices that perhaps have lower tier chipsets run slowly?

I am very impressed with the kind of things people pull out of Claude's жопа but can't see such opportunities in my own work. Is success mostly the result of it being able to test its output reliably, and of how easy it is to set up the environment for this testing?

A lot of times Gemini models will get stuck in a loop of errors in a lot of times it fails to edit/read or other simple function calling

it's really really terrible at agentic stuff

tekacs · 19 days ago
Not so much with Gemini 3 Pro (which came out a few days ago)... to the point that the loop detection that they built into gemini-cli (to fight that) almost always over-detects, thinking that Gemini 3 Pro is looping when it in fact isn't. Haven't had it fail at tool calls either.

The burying of the lede here is insane. $5/$25 per MTok is a 3x price drop from Opus 4. At that price point, Opus stops being "the model you use for important things" and becomes actually viable for production workloads.

Also notable: they're claiming SOTA prompt injection resistance. The industry has largely given up on solving this problem through training alone, so if the numbers in the system card hold up under adversarial testing, that's legitimately significant for anyone deploying agents with tool access.

The "most aligned model" framing is doing a lot of heavy lifting though. Would love to see third-party red team results.

tekacs · 21 days ago
This is also super relevant for everyone who had ditched Claude Code due to limits:

> For Claude and Claude Code users with access to Opus 4.5, we’ve removed Opus-specific caps. For Max and Team Premium users, we’ve increased overall usage limits, meaning you’ll have roughly the same number of Opus tokens as you previously had with Sonnet. We’re updating usage limits to make sure you’re able to use Opus 4.5 for daily work.

It spins for... well I don't know because I gave up and navigated away after about 60 seconds.

I'm not super sure what architecture is in use that means that 16 minutes of being on the HN frontpage leaves it stalling out and unable to respond to requests after 60 seconds, but... it doesn't feel connected with the homepage messaging.

I absolutely appreciate (and have been subject to!) the HN traffic influx before, but for the nature of the product, when doing an _intentional_ Launch HN (not posted by someone else), it's fairly confidence-eroding to see the architecture fail to handle it in this way.

Really hoping that it's something transient and one-time that can be fixed – but surprised that there exist loading screens for this situation.
