Should be against Hacker News policy to post pay-walled sites.

What is this BS?

240V will give you a jolt, but it's really not that bad, at least if it's quick. I grew up in the UK and got my fair share of 240V shocks as a kid - from bare feet touching bare wires/connectors under the table, to me lighting up a small dolls house light bulb by poking stripped pieces of wire into a wall socket, while holding the other end with bare fingers onto the light bulb! I'm not dead yet!

You can even get a 480V shock if you short yourself across two wall sockets wired to alternate phases (+240V, -240V).

'it's really not that bad, ' 'I'm not dead yet!'

That's not how Science / Engineering works. Just because you (one person) have survived various misadventures with 240v (so far) doesn't mean its safe by any means.

The point is 240v at Household amps / current CAN kill you.

It just hasn't YET

tangent-man commented on Timeframe of 8-hour restricted eating irrelevant to weight loss   nia.nih.gov/news/timefram... · Posted by u/hilux

It is important to understand that time restricted eating is behavioral adaptation to reduce caloric consumption. A calorie deficit is what drives weight loss.

Here is a list of similar things that also "work". It is key to understand that "working"- meaning weight loss is the result of a deficit of energy requiring the body to use stored fuel (fat) as energy over time:

-higher protein is more satiating

-higher fiber is more satiating

-keto diets are for most people pretty satiating so they reduce caloric intake

-GLP1s like Ozempic and Mounjaro lead you to feel "full" and eat less through a few mechanisms - slowing digestion, stabilizing insulin and blood sugar

-Drinking lots of water

-subbing out sugars with artificial sweeteners

-fasting, intermittent fasting, time restricted eating, alternate day fasting. For some can lead to a binge but if you adhere to it you are likely to consume less calories

-switching from processed foods to whole foods high in fiber and protein is more satiating

-wearing tighter and more revealing clothing will lead one to eat less

-weighing yourself daily will lead you to eat less (assuming you understand thermodynamics)

-exercising and cardio will lead you to burn more calories. Muscle mass accrued over time burns modestly more calories than fat mass and cardio burns calories directly

-counting calories directly (leads to greater adherence). Just like budgeting. If you don't measure and estimate what is going in vs going out at all and have no experience measuring you are unlikely to succeed.

It is important to understand that NONE of the above are a substitute for a caloric deficit for losing weight but rather one possible path to CAUSING a caloric deficit. The deficit is still required. These are behavioral tools. Hormones, PCOS, insulin etc are also not workarounds to the laws of thermodynamics. They can make you more hungry or burn more or less calories at the margins but they dont change the equation of calories in vs calories out.

Often people confuse the behavioral method to achieve weight loss with the mechanism driving it, and this leads to most of the confusion on weight loss outside of scientific literature (among blogger quacks, fitness guru snakeoil salesman etc.)

Rant over.

I don't think this is entirely true.

Way too many variables to consider here and the human heart/mind/body is much more complex than this, and at the same time much more simple.

To give one example.. by time restricted eating you are breaking the cycle of eating out of habit when you are not even hungry.. or eating because you crave a certain taste or sensation in the body (as opposed to actually being hungry). You are training the mind/body out of these behaviours so that during the times when you are allowed to eat you are trained not to eat unless actually hungry, for example.

I am sure there are many other things to consider other than just calories in .. calories out - such as adapting the body to use stored fuel .. rather than expecting a constant payload of calories to consume.. etc. etc.

Peace out.

Exactly the sort of take I hope to find every time I browse HN.

A thoughtful "what if" that prompts reflection on a topic in a fundamentally unique way, even if it doesn't readily suggest a resolution.

Heh, that's an interesting take on it!?

You speak with such conviction, how much have you studied 'The Big C' or was that more of some sort of gut feeling?

I think the main simple rule they (the cancerous cells that make up a tumour) need to follow is to fecking die!

It's like they (the cells) refuse to accept it is their time. Apoptosis signals get ignored, and they just won't go quietly.(a bit like Jo Biden).

It's a bit like when you are developing in the womb, at the early stages when the embryo (the blastocyst) starts to take on human characteristics.. i.e. when the fingers of the hand develop.. if the cells between the fingers didn't follow the rules and die off when it was their time the individual fingers of the hand wouldn't develop. Indeed, we would just end up like a big fat rotund amorphous blob (a bit like Trump).

It's like the cancer cells have gone bat-shit psychotic and refuse to die quietly.. Have holed themselves up in a discarded/boarded up bando house somewhere with some machine guns and ammo.. Perhaps a few hand grenades, and refuse to go down without a fight. "I'm high strung, click I'm sprung..." ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ And once the bando hijaks a water supply/electric, you're in for one hell of a ride (i.e. gets a blood supply from nearby blood vessel) ..

Best not to let crazy/ psychotic people get in the house in the first place..

It is said there are 3 jewels in 'Buddhism' the Buddha, the Dhamma (The Teachings - the so called laws of nature/reality) and the Sangha.

The word Sangha gets bandied about like nobodies business these days.. and nobody seems to care either.. talk about cultural appropriation! In my opinion westerners who are not ordained and are not true aupasikas have no right to use this word, but alas they do, in droves. I think in this context it means Maha-Sangha .. that is 8 pairs or individuals 4 types of special people:

Supatipanno Bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho. Ujupatipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho. Ñāyapatipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho. Sāmīcipatipanno bhagavato sā- vakasaṅgho. Yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho. Āhuneyyo. Pāhuneyyo. Dakkhineyyo. Anjalikaranīyo. Anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti.

Of pure conduct is the Order of Disciples of the Blessed One. Of upright conduct is the Order of Disciples of the Blessed One. Of wise conduct is the Order of Disciples of the Blessed One. Of generous conduct is the Order of Disciples of the Blessed One. Those four pairs of persons, the eight kinds of individuals, that is the Order of Disciples of the Blessed One. They are worthy of offerings. They are worthy of hospitality. They are worthy of gifts. They are worthy of reverential salutations. The incomparable field of merit for the world.

That is where to start in my opinion. find the true Sangha. there are millions of Buddhist Monks, especially in Asia. I have heard though unfortunately there are only a few thousand perhaps, a handful, practising the true way now. That sadly is the times we are living in. The end of days.. But that is where to start in my opinion. Good luck finding them.
