stryker7001 commented on I’m ready to trade in my electric car   latimes.com/opinion/story... · Posted by u/bookofjoe

Yes, electric cars are not viable unless you can charge at home. Meaning, in your garage / driveway.

This means they're not that useful for people who live in apartments, and most people who live in a city like SF and park on the street(*).

They're also not viable for road trips. Teslas can make it work but you still have to be willing for your trip to take 20 - 30% longer than it would with a gas car.

For people who have a garage or driveway, and don't need to take a road trip that often (or can own a second car for that purpose), they're fantastic! A better experience in almost every way compared to a gas car.

we had a chevy bolt, lived in condo, parked in a parking garage in Cow Hollow in SF. Had no problems charging either at work, or at a charging station down by the marina. We drove it to Yosemite a couple times, drove to Paso, and Napa all for fun. Got rid of it because we didn't need a car while working from home.

Long story short, it was useful and viable even though we didn't have charging.

No, the typical HN responses are the "just pay three times as much for a digital signage display because we're all rich Bay Area types here right" and the "Just use a really cheap crappy panel since we're all old curmudgeons who can't tell the difference in image quality anyway, right" ones.

"Just don't connect it" is the pragmatic option that normal people do.

Thank you for your comment of sanity. I have a ‘smart tv’, never connected it to wifi. Turns on within seconds. No bloat.

Until the plastic results in loss of sales because people don’t want to bother, we probably won’t see it reversed. The cost is sunk. Why wouldn’t they leave it, even if ineffective, as long as it doesn’t cost them anything?
stryker7001 · 3 years ago
Stores have thought of this, and know the effects already. Apparently putting products behind glass causes almost a 50% drop in sales( because people don’t want to bother), so stores would prefer not to put anything behind glass or a counter, but they do because the alternative is 100% loss from theft.

You’re not curious. You’re being disingenuous.

If you were actually curious, you’d read the article, which goes into a lot of detail about the unsafe work conditions, the equipment breakdowns, the unstable hours, the student debt making the unstable hours even more precarious, and so on.

I read the article. It tries to give a balanced view of both the good and the bad, including details, but if your read the article closely, it doesn't say exactly what the union is trying to do.

Also read the 2 links provided above, because I was interested. On the second page 'what will the union do" the answer is 'its up to us', so I tend to agree, it's not clear what they are asking for yet.

Jailbreaking, repairing, or even modifying a device does not void the warranty in the US. It hasn’t since the 70’s. That people still think that it does is pretty sad.
stryker7001 · 4 years ago
dude. the 70s were like 50 years ago. you think tech has not evolved since then?

You have the option of small claims court if they won’t refund you or repair it.
stryker7001 · 4 years ago
if its not in warranty, why would small claims court matter?

I know someone who kept “updating” their TV every year by taking advantage of Costco’s generous return policy. After the 4th time, they let him know they won’t be doing it anymore — I don’t know if that was a whole-store change or it applied specifically to him.

> the official return policy has little bearing on what the employees are empowered to do.

Employees may be empowered but that doesn't mean they'll help. It's a lot of trouble to take your TV off the wall, get all the accessories together, and cart it in to the store. If the employee on duty doesn't feel like helping, you're out of luck.

you realize in this context you are the employee as well.

Location isn’t fungible, people generally need to be geographically located close to their work, family, etc.

What makes more sense, for the state of California to massively increase teachers salaries just so they can afford a basic house, or allow yourself to have a few more neighbors?

At this point it’s pretty obvious what your answer will be so consider that a rhetorical question.

Ive seen this 'people need to live near work' argument, but I don't know what its based on. If a teacher has to commute an hour, they will commute an hour. If a bartender has to commute, they will commute. Wouldn't it be better to make transportation cheaper and easier to use? That way people could live where they can afford, and still work in another place. I don't understand why people have to subsidize someone living close to their job.
