Is it possible we have too much capital in too few hands? Ideas become harder to sell because the ratio of investors to ideas is lower.

I don't know what the solution would be. I tend to favor letting the market figure it out but dunno if that can happen here.

RIP Rob Reiner. The Princess Bride is one of my all-time favorite movies. I have a theory (born out by experience) that most American-born software engineers can quote at least one line from TBL. I often use it as an opener with new hires.

Death can not stop true love. It can only delay it for a while.

I’m no trump supporter but where were these articles and comments by Powell during the Biden presidency when the BLS was constantly revising job numbers downward after the fact? In 2024 they revised numbers over 800,000 jobs downward (coincidentally, also comes out to a bit over 60k jobs a month) The reason for that is that BLS issues “preliminary” job numbers that they then later updated as more information becomes available. Isn’t that possible, and some may argue likely, the same thing happening here?

There is no evidence that the Biden admin was purposefully changing the numbers. As you said they are constantly revised. Powell is (apparently) seeing evidence that the numbers are being changed by the current admin, not just revised

I'd prefer developers make up names for their project to make it easier to search, or at least use a very uncommon word. Gradle is a good example.

It's only hypocritical if you believe in universal values that apply to citizens and outsiders alike, which Trump's camp does not. There is nothing inconsistent with supporting free speech for Americans in America and British people in the U.K. while also supporting screening visitors to those countries based on their ideologies.

Back in May Rubio was going after foreign nationals that were "censoring" Americans.

I’m not a nazi. There is nothing wrong with wanting to live and work with people of your culture.

There IS something wrong with doctors treating people differently due to race, country, religion, gender, etc.

The same reason a parent cares for their child more than a random strangers? Cultures and people matter.

Are you saying that if you were a doctor you'd care less about patients from another country?

I was lucky to catch some of Becky's livestreams on YouTube over the years.

More than a brilliant programmer she was truly a kind soul. She never approached topics with any kind of ego. Just a joy and love for the things she'd worked on and the people she'd worked with

I didn't know her but reading the eulogies it was obvious she was a kind person who touched so many people. I hope some day my eulogies will be similar (if lower in scope).

Food is relatively unimportant except as a source of calories.

This would explain why you don't like Italian pasta.

> In the 1970s, Jewish lawyers at the ACLU defended the American Nazi Party’s right to march in Skokie.

Well, that doesn't mean that

a) they were right to do so then, or

b) a better understanding can't have been reached since then.

The Paradox of Tolerance is a very real thing. If you want to make free speech absolutism a religious principle within your own beliefs, go wild, but for those of us who just want to make this world the best place we can to live in, we have to consider what the consequences of different kinds of speech are.

And the consequence of being tolerant of hate speech is that the speech of those being hated diminishes. Their freedom diminishes. Their safety diminishes. Sooner or later, they are driven out of communities that permit hate speech against them.

"Free speech for all", in the sense that absolutely anyone is fully free at any time to say anything they want, and everybody remains equal in this, is a fantasy. And American jurisprudence has rejected that level of "free speech" since very early on—there are laws against libel, incitement to violence, false advertising, and other forms of speech.

> The Paradox of Tolerance

This phrase needs to be used (and understood) more often. People who act in bad faith use this to their advantage and make our society worse. Look at the response to the Kirk murder: people were fired for daring to say something negative after his death.
