Just a warning for those not on the max plan; if you pay by the token or have the lower tier plans you can easily blow through $100s or cap your plan in under an hour. The rates for paying by the token are insane and the scaling from pro to max is also pretty crazy.

They made pro have many times more value than paying per token and then they made max again have 25x more tokens than pro on the $200 plan.

It’s a bit like being offered rice at $1 per grain (pay per token) or a tiny bag of rice for $20 (pro) or a truck load for $200. That’s the pricing structure right now.

So while i agree you can’t easily exceed the quota on the big plans it’s a little crazy how they’ve tiered pricing. I hope no one out there’s paying per token!

Some companies are. Yes, for Claude Code. My co used to be like that as it's an easy ramp up instead of giving devs who might not use it that much a $150/mo seat; if you use it enough you can have a seat and save money, but if you're not touching $150 in credits a month just use the API. Oxide also recommends using API pricing. [0]

> the rest of its lineup is older models with minor refreshes.

minor refreshes = removing critical controls like turn signal and drive select stalks.

Who would want to go from several dedicated tactile controls in model s/x to no stalks and few controls?

I'm very happy with the new design. I miss the buttons when I drive a car with stalks.

That leading 0 is odd.

I've heard a theory that since the chickenpox vaccine for kids, natural exposure to the virus in the wild is way down, and our immune systems are more likely to forget about it. Not specific to men of course, but a possible explanation for an increase in shingles generally.
square_usual · 9 days ago
There's been a few studies that found increase in shingles as the chicken pox vaccine became more widespread in the US, actually. With the usual caveat that correlation is not causation.

I already got it, apparently there's a weird uptick in men to the point where some doctors are like, nah you don't have that, and then sure enough they realize you do upon further inspection. For context I know men who have gotten it in their mid to late 20s I got it in my early 30s. I'm not sure what the cause is, but for additional context, Shingles is way more common in women.

So there might need to be more studies into shingles and why men are getting it more frequently and younger.

square_usual · 9 days ago
Add another datapoint here if you'd like, got it in my late 20s this year. Fortunately I caught it very early and didn't have as bad of a case as many here seem to have had. My doctor said it's not uncommon to have shingles as a young person, and when I researched it more I found studies that agree with some sibling comments re: lack of exposure to people with chicken pox making it more common.

I'm running a box I put together in 2014 with an i5-4460 (3.2ghz), 16 GB of RAM, GeForce 750ti, first gen SSD, ASRock H97M Pro4 motherboard with a reasonable PSU, case and a number of fans. All of that parted out at the time was $700.

I've never been more fearful of components breaking than current day. With GPU and now memory prices being crazy, I hope I never have to upgrade.

I don't know how but the box is still great for every day web development with heavy Docker usage, video recording / editing with a 4k monitor and 2nd 1440p monitor hooked up. Minor gaming is ok too, for example I picked up Silksong last week, it runs very well at 2560x1440.

For general computer usage, SSDs really were a once in a generation "holy shit, this upgrade makes a real difference" thing.

You can still buy DDR4 for pretty cheap, and if you're replacing a computer that old any system built around DDR4 will still be a massive jump in performance.

square_usual · 12 days ago
It's not easy to "just" fork a huge project like Bun. You'll need to commit several devs to it, and they'll have to have Zig and JSC experience, a hard combo to hire for. In many ways, this is an acquihire.

I find it... very strange that you think software development is less mentally taxing than physical labor.

square_usual · 18 days ago
Have you done physical labour? I find it odd you think physical labor cannot be as mentally taxing. Having done some myself, I agree with GP.

> The display of the colon and parenthesis characters as ":(" relies heavily on the client's font rendering capabilities and the underlying character encoding. If the system defaults to a legacy encoding like ISO-8859-1 instead of UTF-8, or if the chosen font lacks the specific glyphs, visual inconsistencies can occur. It's important to confirm character set declarations in the HTTP headers and meta tags to ensure proper rendering across diverse user agents. This prevents unexpected visual representations of text.

I love the AI pedantry. It's perfect.
