RHSeeger commented on Texas law gives grid operator power to disconnect data centers during crisis   utilitydive.com/news/texa... · Posted by u/walterbell

IIRC the reason Texas cannot get 'assistance' from other states is that the feds made it illegal to connect to most interstate grids without following their regulatory regimes. I believe Texas does connect to Mexico and possible some other regional grids although I don't really understand the exemption for those.

In this case it's not really Texas 'not allowing' other states to help but the other states not allowing Texas. Conceivably federal law could be updated to remove those regulations and Texas would absolutely connect to the interstate grid at that point.

> Conceivably federal law could be updated to remove those regulations and Texas would absolutely connect to the interstate grid at that point.

That, of course, ignores the fact that those regulations are in place for a reason. Texas refuses to play by the rules, and the impact of that is that they don't get help when it's important. It is unfortunate, but a direct consequence of the choices they made.

Having to suspend or expel a student for defending themselves never feels good.

If they are expelled for defending themselves the policies need to change. The cameras should provide evidence they were defending themselves. When enough violent kids are removed the incidence of having to defend one's self should be reduced with time.

RHSeeger · 9 days ago
That's the point though; zero-tolerance means that the cause doesn't matter. Defending yourself means you participated in violence and you're punished for it. Zero-tolerance is a horrible idea in general, and only sense in the context of protecting the institution from liability.

Maybe the word "public" deserves more attention.

Taxing people to fund education seems to be reducing the product to glorified day care.

Those with means (and I would be one) send their kids to private schools for a variety of reasons.

This deserves more analysis.

> Those with means (and I would be one) send their kids to private schools for a variety of reasons.

I don't think this is true at all. There are plenty of areas where the public schools do a fantastic job, and plenty of people "with means" sending their children there.

> Canada and many other countries have talent drained by the US since they can't compete on pay.

What's the relevance here of this? Canada should make better opportunities for their citizens.

RHSeeger · 10 days ago
And the reverse of that is that folks in the US should agree to work for less; so that they get the jobs. Neither one is as easy as it sounds.

My impression of duolingo was strongly influenced by a former PM who said basically what OP said without any hint of ill will in their voice. Duolingo discovered that it was easier to reward-hack short term signals of language learning instead of scaffolding those signals into longterm language learning. Today it’s essentially Candy Crush for people who think they’re too smart for Candy Crush.

That’s not even a diss, it’s just The Way Of The World when you are directly rewarded for growth and retention and very indirectly for language learning.

> Today it’s essentially Candy Crush for people who think they’re too smart for Candy Crush.

That's overly harsh. I use Duolingo for Japanese because

- I thought it would be fun to learn a little about Japanese. And I do learn some, and it is fun.

- I wanted to "understand" a bit of what was being said during subtitled anime I watch. This was _partially_ successful. I understand some words, and I notice some things like "oh, that was a question", and sometimes notice when what was said doesn't match the text. I get enough out of it that it adds to my enjoyment

So, clearly there's a group of people out there that are there to gain some knowledge out of it, and _not_ to rack up some kind of score (and feel superior).

I was under the impression that AIM, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN all used XMPP. It seems that AIM added support for it in 2008, but Adium (and the other multi-chat clients) were just doing some magic to make it work seamlessly.

And Trillian.

I remember I had a pluging for Trillian that allowed me to write code to script it in Tcl. And then a plugin written in Tcl that allowed me to quicksearch my contacts. Good times.

Often "Alums" nowadays, as Alumni is traditionally male gendered.

RHSeeger · 16 days ago
I don't think I've ever heard this. The alumni of the university has always, from my experience, been used to refer to everyone that graduated; gender playing no role at all.

I'd also recommend the Destiny's Crucible series - the basic premise is that a chemist from our world is transported to another planet of humans at a much lower technological level, and some moderately standard isekai hijinks ensue.

I read five of the books, and really enjoyed them; if you like the "competence porn" genre of novels, this is a pretty good one.

RHSeeger · 18 days ago
> "competence porn"

See... now, I love that type of show/comic/book/etc. And now that I have a name for it, I want to search for more. But I very much do _not_ want to search for that term. Lol

Highly recommend the Dr. Stone anime if you're interested in a story with the premise of starting civilization from scratch but armed with the sum total of modern human knowledge about science and engineering.
RHSeeger · 18 days ago
I watch this with my daughter and we love it. I love shows with "narration", talking about the context/details of things, and Dr Stone really nails that (I know the main character isn't really a narrator.. but it accomplishes the same thing).

If you like password managers, you'll love passkeys!

Passkeys is an interface between your password manager and a website without all the fluff with filling or copy-pasting passwords.

RHSeeger · 18 days ago
I love password managers. I dislike passkeys. So clearly that's not the case.
