lol you don't get it. If it's published it means it's not very useful

What about the Attention paper?

It was not always like this. Google was very secretive in the early days. We did not start to see things until the GFS, BigTable and Borg (or Chubby) papers in 2006 timeframe.

By 2006, Google was 8 years old. OpenAI is now 10.

Meta is also being pretty open with their stuff. And recently most of the Chinese competition.

Oh yes, I believe that's right. What's some frontier research Meta has shared in the last couple years?

From the blog:

https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.00663

https://arxiv.org/pdf/2504.13173

Is there any other company that's openly publishing their research on AI at this level? Google should get a lot of credit for this.

It's like driving behind a truck or van, you can't see past the (tinted) car in front.

The solution would be to overtake people with tinted windows. Unfortunately, the type of people with tinted windows are exactly the type you shouldn't overtake.

You didn't notice as soon as energy was needed for AI, all the tech companies gave up on green power and reducing emissions?

There's books written about the Bay Area and the factors that make (or made) it uniquely suited for developing new technologies. There's even college courses about it. Some of it's surely provincial fluff, but it's undeniable that California has been an essential incubator for a whole series of world-changing, fortune-making technologies.

I wish Google would use their learnings from Waymo/Streetview in Maps navigation. When I drive through a complicated intersection for the first time it's a bit of guesswork what's the right thing to do. Here in France at least since space is at a premium there are a lot of weird intersections that are hard to navigate.

What? This is what you are paid to do in your work life.

This isn’t a thread about your whole life.
