softwarebeware commented on Ask HN: Platform for 11 year old to create video games?    · Posted by u/IgorPartola

>Look at all the games that flop on Steam each year. These are made by professionals. It's disheartening for kids when the thing they've worked hard on simply isn't fun — particularly when they share it with friends and are met with, at best, a shrug.

Why should this be a concern? Should people not paint for fun if their pictures aren't museum-worthy? Should they not play basketball just because they aren't NBA material? The point of doing something yourself is to do it, not to compete with professionals.

of course it's a concern because kids don't know that there's going to be a big gap between what they create and what they envision so it's disheartening for them
softwarebeware commented on Another Google Ads account suspension for no reason plus no reply from support    · Posted by u/softwarebeware

Update:

Today 01/05 the account was finally reactivated with no explanation. I only ever received templated emails from their support department demanding “proof of all payments made in the last two months”. I repeatedly emailed that there have been no payments in the last two months only to receive the same email in reply. Then in a bizarre event I received an email this morning that the account was reactivated.

Funny how Brooks’ Law is still something people are learning: “ And counter-intuitively, adding more people to an early-stage project doesn't make it go faster.”

I detest Meta as much as the next guy but I can't bring myself to feel bad for Threads Software Limited here. This is what you get when you pick your company name out of a dictionary in an attempt to be trendy/minimalist.

Shouldn't you feel "bad" for Meta then? They apparently both "picked the name out of the dictionary in an attempt to be trendy/minimalist" _and_ knew about Threads Software Limited before they put the name into use anyway.

I feel like I'm in the minority that has zero problem paying for an ad-free experience. I get tremendous value out of YouTube in both professional and personal ways. I have a daughter who watches it often. Suppressing ads while supporting the service my family enjoys regularly seems like a no-brainer to me. And I never have to worry about them circumventing my ad blocker.

I really have to disagree with the disparagement of vim/scp at the beginning. It's a bit slower to start if you begin with command-line tools, but the dividends payed out by learning the standard command-line utilities are huge. Learning the command-line utilities means you have the tool-set to build your own tool-set; since it's a lot easier to using CLI tools as building blocks for larger tools.

At both of the last jobs I've held, it was rare that you would be in an environment where you had a full IDE. And in both cases I was asked several command-line oriented questions during the interviews.

Also big disagree on the final statement of the article. CS is not a vocational major, nor should it be. There are plenty of good post-secondary schools that focus on writing code and the tools you use to do so; CS curricula should not be focused on producing programmers, it should be focused on producing computer scientists. The recent insistence that we turn CS programs into job-mills is one of the big reasons for declining quality in my opinion, my local university CS program was recently told to "push more people through" and to make the curriculum "less theoretical" and more "career oriented". If you want that kind of stuff, go to a career college.

You're talking about this right?

> I think CS curricula should have a class that focuses specifically on these issues, on the matter of how do you actually write software?

Are you really opposed to "a class" on writing software being included in CS curricula? CS courses have plenty of writing software.

The headline is dismal. Now writers can’t even be bothered to write what the improvement is? 40% of ______? “…Just trust us, 40% of something is ‘shaved’ …it’s good we promise.”

The tech landscape is infinitely wide at this point. Are you looking to up-skill in your current area or a new area? For me, I always look to younger people. They are always the future for a fast moving industry. In particular, I grew up in the era when you bought huge 500 page books to learn about new technology. In large part, that is dead. You can learn most things online, but not as deep.

Is it possible to mentor young people outside your team? (I say outside your team specifically to avoid manager-worker conflicts.) It is a real eye-opener to spend time with young people. Just watching the way they learn can teach an old dog new tricks.

Last: Is there something on Reddit? If not, how about starting it? I am sure there are lots of devs in their 50s+ looking for somewhere to congregate online.

There is r/ExperiencedDevs but some people join with a definition of "experienced" as two or three years.
