Maybe there's a niche for Valve/Steam to step into here. They already have your data, and many people use Discord for gaming related chat.
small_scombrus · 2 days ago
You can already make steam friend group chats, it was just a bit janky when I last used it like 5 years ago

What's the point of the licensing on these chat servers charging per-user when self hosting?
small_scombrus · 2 days ago
A LOT of open source software offers features tiers with per user pricing even when self-hosting.

They do need to fund development, but SSO is almost always in the top two level pricings :(

I always assumed mobile webpage misbehavior was to force you to use the app.
small_scombrus · 6 days ago
It could very much be confirmation bias, but I do feel like most "please use our app" popups appear after a mobile site breaks or refuses to load something

Not having perfect security, does not mean it will be disastrous. My OpenClaw has been serving me just fine and I've been getting value out of it integrating and helping me with various tasks.

What are the returns for a landowner leasing a solar farm vs passively growing pines? My state has a lot of land to use and a good portion of the rural part is pine. Some landowners harvest pine trees on unused land.

> What are the returns for a landowner leasing a solar farm

Depending on what you're doing with your land, you can multi-use solar farm + grazing, or solar farm + some crops which increases it's value.

small_scombrus · 20 days ago
Base JSON not supporting comments is a sometimes annoying 'feature' because without it no-one can use the comments to try and add extra functionality into their JSON file using comment tags so you don't end up with a million JSON+ custom formats.

I think XML for documents lost to markdown.

Between markdown and HTML, there is no need for XML in that domain anymore either.

small_scombrus · 20 days ago
Unfortunately Word documents are XML. Microsoft has a LOT of customisation going on, but at the core it's very ugly, incredibly complex xml :(

Eep.

So, on my M1 mac, did `uvx pocket-tts serve`. Plugged in

> It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only

(Beginning of Tale of Two Cities)

but the problem is Javert skips over parts of sentences! Eg, it starts:

> "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, ..."

Notice how it skips over "it was the age of foolishness,", "it was the winter of despair,"

Which... Doesn't exactly inspire faith in a TTS system.

(Marius seems better; posted https://github.com/kyutai-labs/pocket-tts/issues/38)

Using your first text block 'Eponine' skips "we had nothing before us" and doesn't speak the final "that some of its noisiest"

I wonder what's going wrong in there

All things done with office must be evil by association.

Why is trash an "enormous externality"? Even if the retailer took it back it would still be... trash.
small_scombrus · a month ago
> Even if the retailer took it back it would still be... trash.

Yes, but making them deal with it would create a massive incentive to either reduce the amount of rubbish they make, or to make it recyclable/processable.
