I was using a vertical Logitech mouse but was still experiencing discomfort mousing out to the side of my enormous Advantage2 keyboard. In an effort to head off any compounding RSI issues, I switched to a ploopy Adept trackball. Had no idea if I'd like switching to a trackball, and I love it! My hand never moves in an awkward motion, and mousing has become pretty restful. Better be careful tossing the ball up in the air idly during meetings as I won't be able to get a replacement if ploopy has paused shipping to the US (It's a pretty dumb habit at any rate).

They're just 1.75" snooker balls. It's very easy to get a big box of them. You'll also quickly notice why red never goes out of stock on Ploopy's website.

Using AI generated art in a blog post where one of the major points is big companies using AI art to replace artists is ironic.

No, because to replace a notes app you need pen and paper. But to replace LLM you need at least a human. There's literally nothing else. And humans don't come cheap.

Most AI applications are just enhanced google (to make up for how trashed google got by LLMs!)

Pretty much every creator I follow has complained about something being removed without any clear explanation or the ability to contact anyone and ask questions.

Say what you want about Microsoft, but if I have a problem with something I've pretty much always ended up getting support for that problem. I think Google's lack of response adds to their "mystique".

But it also creates superstitions since creators don't really understand the firm rules to follow.

Regardless, it is one of the most dystopian things about modern society - the lack of accountability for their decisions.

Youtube needs a far greater amount of bureaucracy than it has, despite how scary that word is to tech people. Google's automated approach is clearly not capable of keeping up with the scale and nuance of the website.

It's worth stating, though, that the vast majority of youtube's problems are the fault of copyright law and massive media publishers. Google could care less if you wanted to upload full camrips of 2025's biggest blockbusters, but the powers-that-be demand Google is able to take it down immediately. This is why 15 seconds of a song playing in the background gets your video demonitized.

The open source / open hardware offerings from Ploopy are very attractive for people that don't want to take this route

https://ploopy.co

They've apparently suspended shipping to the US, though. Not sure who to blame for that one..

Twitter is really not far from 4chan in 2025.
dmonitor · 4 days ago
That's understating it. They're practically the same at this point, 4chan just has fewer bots.

Actually 4chan does have accounts, otherwise you get extremely nasty captchas.

Anyways, image boards are ephemeral because the devs were incompetent and cheap, it wasn't some genius design, or design at all.

dmonitor · 4 days ago
the emergent behavior from ephemeral posting has become a feature by this point. and while it does technically have accounts, they don't at all work like a normal social media account. they aren't published, and using the "this is for sure me" tripcode feature is socially frowned upon.

Aldi in the USA uses a coin system on their carts, you insert a quarter to unlock the chain. It's not so much about theft, if someone wanted a cart, a quarter is a cheap price to pay. They do it so that people bring the carts back to the corral at the front of the store to get their quarter back, instead of leaving them in the parking area. That way, the store doesn't need to hire someone to go out and gather the carts every 15 minutes.

In my view it's quite an inconvenience: who carries quarters around anymore? I rarely have any cash with me, let alone loose change.

I expect we'll soon see something where you make a small payment with your card or mobile pay app which is rebated when you return the cart.

That's what incentivizes you to take your quarter back. I keep a quarter in my car's center console for Aldi and getting a new one is a hassle.

why an app? Why not a simple light or error code on device?

dmonitor · 5 days ago
so long as the protocol is simple enough to be recreated in nRF Connect, Bluetooth is fine. A proprietary bluetooth connection would be gross, though.
