$250k a year, for now. What's to stop anthropic for doubling the price if your entire business depends on it? What are you gonna do, close shops?
ikr678 · a day ago
Yeah this is just trading largely known & controllable labour management risks for some fun new unknown software ones.

You can negotiate with your human engineers for comp, you may not be able to negotaiate with as much power against Anthropic etc (or stop them if they start to change their services for the worse).

LinkedIn has been employing a lot of strange dark patterns recently:

* Overriding scroll speed on Firefox Web. Not sure why.

* Opening a profile on mobile web, then pressing back to go to last page, takes me to the LinkedIn homepage everytime.

* One of their analytic URLs is a randomly generated path on www.linkedin.com, supposedly to make it harder to block. Regex rules on ublock origin sufficiently stop this.

Anyone know why they could be doing this?

I always assumed mobile webpage misbehavior was to force you to use the app.

A friend owned farm land in India, he moved to Canada. The property deed was in his name.

Someone in India, with fraudulent documents "sold" his land.

He only came to know about it when he next visited India. Unfortunately he could not do much. There are people who will actively look through property records - if the person is not a local resident ( lives internationally ), then they are prime targets.

This was a decade ago - things have gotten a lot better with digital records and India's Universal ID system. But I did not realize, something like this was possible in the US.

ikr678 · 5 days ago
This is very prevalent in South Africa, to the point there is a legal cottage industry around verifying original documents vs counterfits (down to fingerprint testing, chemical analysis of inks).

I'm a total noob on this.

I get that vacuum is a really good insulator, which is why we use it to insulate our drinks bottles. So disposing of the heat is a problem.

Can't we use it, though? Like, I dunno, to take a really stupid example: boil water and run a turbine with the waste heat? Convert some of it back to electricity?

ikr678 · 6 days ago
Harder to direct waste heat in space if you dont have gravity for convection.

That's a great analogy, but could be taken one step further. Because Adobe would also have to rename the rest of their products to come close to what MS is doing.

  - Adobe Neural Filter Acrobat
  - Adobe Neural Filter App (previously photoshop)
  - Adobe Neural Filter Illustrator
  - Adobe 720 Neural Filter app
  - etc.
By the way, why is app lowercase in "the Microsoft 365 Copilot app"? Is it not part of the trademark but even they couldn't deal with how confusing that was?

ikr678 · 6 days ago
'app' isnt part of that trademark, but on other products (Windows App) it is.

Searching the store or a company portal for one of these rebraned apps returns dozens of hits because 'windows', 'copilot', '365' and 'app' are all common words in most application descriptions.

I'll be going out tonight if this continues into Australian night time hours.

At this strength, I could see the full display including colors with my naked eye in Melbourne, May 11th 2024. This storm is slightly stronger than that event.

All I know is that when I watch someone at 3am, running their tenth parallel agent session, telling me they’ve never been more productive
... okay, I'll bite. What is actually being made here?

These people are so productive, running 10 checkouts of a repo with Claude or whoever... Code must be flying out. I'm sure github is seeing a rise in lines pushed faster than ever.

I am not seeing an explosion of products worthy of any cents out of this, though, at least nowhere near what is being evangelised by the "trust me bro, we're productivity gods now".

Where is the output of all these tokens going, when you wake up the next morning?

I've used AI quite a lot. Enough to know that an inference state machine is an inference state machine.

I want to see it, I want to believe! Show me the goods! Stop telling everyone how productive you are and show the finished work.

At least the post seems to be rightfully conclusive that people are going to go _insane_.

Vibecoding slop every night, waking up the next morning, starting again, and again. Without any meaning or end; I suspect these people will quit and move on to something else. I've been programming, probably averagely, for over 25 years -- because I like computers -- not because I like being a productivity junkie, shooting on dopamine.

Make it count.

Vibe coding is to software development as fad diets are to weightloss.

There are many systems, the Australian Federation of independent States adopted a "Washminster" system based on both the UK Westminster system and the USofA Washington system.

Popular election of senators in the senate / upper house hasn't been a disaster there.

* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Senate

Australia also has political weightings wrt various regions populations.

ikr678 · 20 days ago
The Australian Electoral Commision as an independent body does a lot of heavy lifting towards keeping the washminster system running (no gerrymandering and a world class voting system).

While this is cool to see, would be nice to see some indication of the nation specific context for those outside that nation... especially since it's the more generic .com tld instead of say .uk ...

Maybe even a Union Jack in the corner as a background image, or something.

Given the arguments I have had with people on here about swearing and formal language and all the self censoring they seem to do, I thought it was immediately obvious from the URL that this was not american.

No. It's when the web site doesn't say who it's for at all, that's when everybody struggles. And understandably so.
ikr678 · a month ago
Except that as a english speaking non american, this happens literally all the time with ecommerce?

It's not until I get to checkout I realise they do not ship to my country or want to deal with me.
