Before I knew what durian was, I and a close friend were served some by his Honduran wife. I having a dumpster stomach, and have been known to eat anything, took the biggest piece and popped it in my mouth and started chewing. That's when I got hit by a number of flavors. The flavors were not powerful, all of them just teasing. But I got them none the less. Rancid sock. Sweetness. Turpentine. Death.

After the experience, I felt that the fruit was not largely available, not local, not my cup of tea. Goodbye durian.

I've had mostly negative experiences with Airbnb over the years.

My neighbors airbnb their house every weekend. So nice loud music and rude guests to deal with fairly often. Of course why not? They are not accountable to rest of us full timers in my neighborhood.

My place was broken into by someone who stayed at it before using Airbnb.

One guest almost started a fire and had to be removed.

Checking in and out of airbnbs can be a bit of a nightmare. Everyone has their own process for checkin.

Airbnb destroying local real estate markets is no surprise. They've been doing it for several years and getting in trouble for it for several years.

Growth at all costs - no matter what it does to local markets or people's lives. I'm sure their impact on local economies is the least of their concern until the governments attached to those economies start to speak up.

It's long term renters that increase the probability of issues/squatting/ill-maintenance cropping up, and generally start a long term degradation of the neighborhood. Long term renters also seem to buy ridiculously overpowered audio systems, and run them in such a way that one can hear the thump-thump bass, a block away. Not to mention they often pack like sardines into a place, and then you have 4 or 5 autos per residence.

I think it's not quite that simple. In the end run up to a bubble, there's a lot of money floating on big bets. Some of them are going to pay off. Most won't. Maybe Uber will. Maybe it won't. They say future value is priced into a stock, and this is where margin for error is the highest.

I think smart money in Uber recognizes their position as a gamble.

Regularly you hear about hundreds of millions being poured into companies like Uber and self driving tech companies. At least one of those companies is going to win big, and investors don't want to miss out.

Right, but that's not the points that the article made. Article's author proposed that THE reason, (not A reason) for airbnb's high value is because cheap money makes non-physical assets expensive. You're explanation was that cheap money makes for "big bets", and stocks can price the future in.

Your answer is good. I agree. The stock market is Vegas. The stock market fueled by cheap money, is Vegas times a billion.

I find the article lacking. And I'm being polite.

There is no hvac in France in people's houses. According to this website, http://www.climatisations.net/marche.html, 5% of houses and 25% of businesses have hvac.

France is at the latitude of Wyoming. And it has ocean on two sides. And plenty of people in Wyoming don't have air conditioning. My mother lives in Wyoming, and has no AC in her brand new condo.

If the NSA were a noble creature, we could rest easy.

There is no nobility in our governments though. No grace. They'll often trade data, up and down, with local governments, and the local governments can benefit from that federal warrantless data.

When the state of Arizona sweeps up all the non-licensed manicurists in Phoenix, and you're wondering "How the hell did Sheriff Billy Bob know about all these people..."

When you hear that really bad people will only be the targets of 4th amendment violations, don't be naive. Don't believe a word of it. And don't forget that government finds low hanging fruit absolutely delicious. "Look at what we got done." -says some random bureaucrat. While collecting some of the fattest pensions this side of the industrial revolution.

My grandfather lived to 94. Towards the end, the doctors had him on all sorts of schtuff. When he started his final decline in the last months, a hospice worker started coming a couple of times a week to check on him. Grandpa no longer wanted to hang around, ready to "see grandma again", he didn't want to take his medications. We finally relented when the hospice lady said that it was OK, so grandpa was allowed to stop taking his medications. Then something odd happened. Grandpa got better. Which really him. The hospice lady said that it was normal, and she'd seen that happen many times. Grandpa's recovery was shortlived though, mainly because he was hellbent on checking out, and he finally passed, in not too horrible a manner. He fell asleep, then fell into a deep unconscious state, then everything just shut down. In retrospect, I attribute his longevity, aside from genetic potential, to moderation, as well as getting moderate daily sunshine, fresh air, home cooking, walking, and having a reason to get out of bed every morning to attack the day. He had minimal immunizations, I'm sure the ones he got where of the highest quality (who the hell knows the quality control of modern mass produced overseas immunizations), he also took no supplements, and his exposure to the changes in mass produced food in recent decades, would have been minimal as most of his life had already passed. I'm in my late 40s, and virtually all of my friends have similar stories to tell. Our grandparents lived a long time. Our parents less so. And we're sure that our own lifespans will be even less. Pure lifespan aside, looking at the quality of life, it's even more dramatic. Grandpa and his friends did more at 60, then I did at 40. Parents did more at 50 then friends and I did at 40. Now it's common knowledge that 20 and 30 year olds are increasingly shocking doctors in trend-like fashion, with general poor health, and issues.

When I was a kid, growing up, I recall when the "moral majority" (umbrella term describing the coalition of various protestant groups), and they decided right and wrong, and had the power to a large degree, to shove that down other people's throats. Everything was closed on Sundays, dry counties (no alcohol sales), various conservative dress/grooming/self-expression conventions.

They have mostly lost this influence and power, only to be replaced by something equally distasteful, your explanation not withstanding. You sound exactly like the supporters. Sure the details differ, but you've nailed down the "ends justify the means" spin, just like every other movement that wants to push their world view and morality. The kicker is the whole "it's not enforcing morality" or defending a world view schtik. It's deciding not to do business with various groups of people, under pressure from other groups of people. As a JFK democrat, and individual, I say fuck that. Good riddance.
