bullet trains should be displayed in red, but I haven't tested it yet at the right time and I've been too lazy to write tests with mocked time / gps :)

Looking at it now and the bullet has black text

I was wondering about that. At military-industrial scale, that's a lot of fiber optic cable.

And it's glass, no? So not going to environmentally degrade over time.

Considering the fighting is mostly over agricultural fields, what are the long term consequences of years of war?

Somehow I don’t think that’s their primary concern at the moment

TIL that Agilent was still in business. I thought it was a straight name-change to Keysight for their electronic test equipment business.

> Windows startup is perfectly fine

No... it's not fine. I don't reboot all the time for work or run a zillion VMs, I'm just a regular user. But sometimes when I'm rebooting - I need to get to necessary information quickly. Waiting 40+ seconds is an eternity when standing at an airport immigration counter pulling up a pre-filed form that they said I did not need to bring but which they're now demanding (because their machines are rebooting).

I'm glad you feel it's fine for you. Not all of us agree. I'm especially annoyed because much of the new bloat slowing my life down during startup is stupid and unnecessary shit I don't even use much (or ever) - like initializing CoPilot, Edge, and now, Office.

Note: I even upgraded my SSD to an expensive Samsung 990 Pro, reportedly one of the fastest available. It's still >40 secs - and I've already gone through and thoroughly pruned all the unnecessary services, tasks and autoruns that I can. It's a top of the line >$3000 laptop that's less than a year old.

Something is wrong with your computer if it takes 40 seconds, I have a similar samsung SSD and it takes like 20 seconds maximum from a cold boot to desktop on Win11

I'm bouncing between this and thinking that "this time it's different". You can reverse tariffs policy, but a lost trust is very hard to repair.
sentientslug · 5 months ago
Every time this happens people say it’s different. See: COVID pandemic. And we know the V shaped recovery that came after that. Of course that shouldn’t be interpreted as a predictor of what’s to come next (because it’s not), my only point is to say that the same rhetoric pops up frequently during downtowns since forever.

A genuine confusion for me - as a visual artist - about how two things can be true: this can be a great love letter to such an iconic and brilliant song, and also why generative AI was used to create accompanying imagery in this article. I don't see how an piece about the 'joys of music production' - aka, creativity - should also actively be anti-creative. To me, those two thoughts seem completely opposing.
sentientslug · 5 months ago
Not just the imagery, very clearly the text as well. It really puts me off of reading an article when it's so obvious, I'm not sure why. It almost feels like the author is trying to pull something over on me.

If you're so against free SSl's with an option for shorter half life you could use a paid alternative? Not sure I understand your grip with a free service
sentientslug · 6 months ago
Free services are not immune to valid criticism, although I do think they are going a bit too far.

Unfortunately, I have to hope this doesn't see widespread adoption. If this becomes the standard it will just add to already existing social pressure to get an iPhone in the US.
sentientslug · 7 months ago
To me this argument makes no sense. Apple should never introduce any new features or services to their ecosystem because it might increase “social pressure” to get an iPhone?
