Some influential iOS devs such as @dimillian and @steipete have moved away from Xcode or even xcodebuild where possible.
s_dev · 6 days ago
Which is completely fine. However these are people with lots of experience in Xcode already. People can have preferences including default options.

Is this bait? XCode has been a mainstay of iOS development ever since iOS was introduced and is a successor to Interface Builder on the Mac.

Why wouldn’t engineers prefer tools they’ve been using (mostly happily) for a decade+?

>Is this bait?

I don't think it's a serious question or the person is very young.

To answer the question. Xcode is the default IDE for iOS development. The default option will always be a practical choice.

JetBrains or Anthropic could get bought by a larger company or dismantled by the government somehow. Should anything happen to Apple (unlikely as that may seem) the entire iOS ecosystem would be gone as well negating any need for a default.

+1 and also add a feature for unique words to show how you vocab ranks

> unique words to show how you vocab ranks

I think writing well with plain language would be a better indicator of worthwhile contributions than estoeric jargon that only serves to confuse or intimate. That would be a lot more difficult to measure though, the number of fancy words per post probably is a lot easier to vibe code.

Name some. Some that match those kinds of services mentioned that people need from AWS.

Based on your comment you probably aren't gonna discuss in good faith but move the goalposts each time.

tl;dw: Knowing the name of something gives you no knowledge of that thing even if you can name it in every language but it's super useful to know when communicating with others.

Colourful terminals are so useful. I have mine colour coded according to the working directory depending on the project. So I can see which terminal is associated with which project even if there are twenty terminals open. The scripts are even in my servers so when I ssh in to them it changes colour as well.

I feel that's more "US public transport being bad"
s_dev · 12 days ago
A big problem in America is the entrenchment that is happening. People are becoming so polarised there is no common ground left for discussions and people aren't open to new ideas or thinking.

I genuinely feel I can't even discuss this with many Americans. They stalwartly believe car culture is superior in every single aspect, any deviation from this narrative is simply met with 'you don't understand'.

I recall in Ireland they asked an American on public TV what he thought of one of the few pedestrians only streets in Dublin (Liffey Street). He pointed out that he would be sorry for the loss of the trade on that street for the business involved compared to if cars were allowed to drive on it. It's then pointed out they make way more money since the transition as it's a city centre location with enormous footfall.

He just counters that's not possible and cited some example in the US.

Daan here, founding engineer and systemd maintainer.

So we try to make every new feature that might be disruptive optional in systemd and opt-in. Of course we don't always succeed and there will always be differences in opinion.

Also, we're a team of people that started in open source and have done open source for most of our careers. We definitely don't intend to change that at all. Keeping systemd a healthy project will certainly always stay important for me.

>We are building cryptographically verifiable integrity into Linux systems. Every system starts in a verified state and stays trusted over time.

What problem does this solve for Linux or people who use Linux? Why is this different from me simply enabling encryption on the drive?

>Amutable is based out of Berlin, Germany.

Probably obvious from the surnames but this is the first time I've seen a EU company pop up on Hacker News that could be mistaken for a Californian company. Nice to see that ambition.

I understand systemd is controversial, that can be debated endlessly but the executive team and engineering team look very competitive. Will be interesting to see where this goes.
