I’ve seen this stated many times on HN, but never knowingly experienced it with Amazon in the UK. Is it possible this varies by market?
esskay · 3 days ago
It does happen with Amazon UK, or at least has within the last year because I've twice had it, first time with a microsd card, second time with an ssd.

They obviously replaced it no problem but it highlighted they were either still mixing stock or were using a dodgy supplier themselves.

From Apple's point of view, Apple Vision (Pro) is the ultimate platform. That's why I think they were so convinced in developing it. If VR/AR headsets follow the same transition we had between the first gigantic mobile phones of thw 80s and the pocketable ones of the 2000s, I could seriously see Apple throwing out all their consumer lineup (phone, watch, ipad, macbook) and only have a Vision device. This would solve all the problems regarding different experiences.

We're still a long way before it being a viable option to ditch all other devices for. If they could get it working as an AR glasses wirelessly reliant on an iPhone then that would be the thing that makes it go from weird overpriced useless product to an actual useful device.

Getting rid of the phone completely though is a whole other issue and we're nowhere near being able to ship anything with enough computing power and battery capacity into a form factor as light as standard glasses.

The whole chunky VR headset thing - no, that's not taking off as a thing people will wear all day.

Thats a blast from the past, I'd completely forgotten about putty (moved away from Windows when Vista came out). The pain of SSH on an OS that seems to be intentionally made to be as clunky as hell for developers however is never something I'll miss.

keep moving those goal posts to justify your denial
esskay · 10 days ago
How can there be denial for something you cant actually demonstrate is anything more than a fringe issue?

And theres the "obscure cases where the details are being conveniently glossed over" part. How long has he been sentence to jail for again?

I'm not defending his arrest, and quite obviously something went very wrong there, but again, we're talking about jail here. Posting an obscure cockup as if its the norm is pretty disingenuous.

Then create a new party, give talks about this, mobilize your friends, family, make them understand that civil liberty is literally worth dying for
esskay · 10 days ago
For a new political party to succeed in the uk you need millions in funding, and nobodys going to fund something that potentially affects their vast sums of money.

"Just start a new party and tell people about it" is perhaps the most misleading and flawed idea you could present unfortunately. There have been new parties, there are new parties at every general election, you never hear about them for good reason.

For the Americans looking at this act, you're maybe putting it in the context of American politics and thinking who cares if the porn sites have my face or id.

But in the UK you can be arrested and jailed for saying something online that offends someone else.

It's hard to take this seriously, especially when if I ask for citations it'll likely be a couple of extremely obscure cases where the details are being conveniently glossed over.

Maybe it's just me but this looks like a nightmare to get any work done. Way too cluttered and uncomfortable looking. That "Desk" if it can be called that just looks like someone nipped down to their local DIY shop and picked up some budget garage storage, slapped a bit of rough cut wood on it and called it a day.

Im not American, nor do I live in the US.

You guys seem to be right behind the US when it comes to fascism 2.0 though.

Oh 100% we are. Most likely outcome is Reform get in during the next election and we end up with Farage trying to "Make Britain Great Again" or some such nonsense.

Crap times ahead!
