I think the exact opposite is true: LLMs revealed that when you average everything together, it's really bland and uninteresting no matter how technically good. It's the small choices that bring life into a thing and transform it from slop into something interesting and worthy of attention.

I think we agree but my prediction is that the slop will win

The great reveal of LLMs is that our systems of checks and balances don't really work, and allow grifters to thrive, but despite that most people were actually trying to do their jobs properly. Perhaps nothing matters to you except the most shallow approximation of a thing, but there are usually people harmed by such negligence.

I'm just as upset as you are about it, believe me. Unfortunately I have to live in the world as I see it and what I've observed in the last 18-ish months is a complete breakdown of prior assumptions.

I think the point I wanted to make was that even if it was deterministic (which you can technically make it to be I guess?) you still shouldn’t live in a world where you’re guided by the “guesses” that the model makes when solidifying your intent into concrete code. Discounting hallucinations (I know this a is a big preconception, I’m trying to make the argument from a disadvantaged point again), I think you need a stronger argument than determinism in the discussion against someone who claims they can write in English, no reason for code anymore; which is what I tried to make here. I get your point that I might be taking the discussion to seriously though.

The future is about embracing absolute chaos. The great reveal of LLMs is that, for the most part, nothing actually mattered except the most shallow approximation of a thing.

The only thing I can understand is that GHA is awesome because it's YAML and everyone loves YAML. Irrationally. YAML is terrible.
liveoneggs · 3 days ago
GHA is hosted, works well-enough, and you already pay a github bill so you don't need to onboard a new vendor.

what's wrong with Jenkins? It's battle tested and hardened. Works flawless even with thousands of tasks, and WORKS OUT OF THE BOX.

imo top 10 best admin/devs free software written in past 25 years.

It's too old and easy-to-use for anyone to hype it up as the next cool thing.

Are you certain? Not OP, but a huge chunk of early RFCs was about how to let giant IBM systems talk to everyone else, specifying everything from character sets (nearly universally “7-bit ASCII”) to end of line/message characters. Otherwise, IBM would’ve tried to make EBCDIC the default for everything.

For instance, consider FTP’s text mode, which was primarily a way to accidentally corrupt your download when you forgot to type “bin” first, but was also handy for getting human readable files from one incompatible system to another.

I had a pre-'@' email address and it was able to communicate all over the world.

> We see that that’s a quite a long line. Mail servers don’t like that

Why do mail server care about how long a line is? Why don't they just let the client reading the mail worry about wrapping the lines?

This is how email work(ed) over smtp. When each command was sent it would get a '200'-class message (success) or 400/500-class message (failure). Sound familiar?

telnet smtp.mailserver.com 25

HELO

MAIL FROM: me@foo.com

RCPT TO: you@bar.com

DATA

blah blah blah

how's it going?

talk to you later!

.

QUIT

Keep in mind that in ye olden days, email was not a worldwide communication method. It was more typical for it to be an internal-only mail system, running on whatever legacy mainframe your org had, and working within whatever constraints that forced. So in the 90s when the internet began to expand, and email to external organizations became a bigger thing, you were just as concerned with compatibility with all those legacy terminal-based mail programs, which led to different choices when engineering the systems.

Ever since Google experimented LLM in Gmail it bothers me alot. I firmly believe every word and the way you put them together portrays who you are. Using LLM for direct communication is harmful to human connections.

Honestly I'd say that's the New 3DS XL.

I only played it briefly with a friend (street fighter) and the actual 3d seemed neat but it didn't wow me (or my eyes couldn't focus properly?).

I wanted to be wow-ed at the level of that old cowboy arcade hologram game. :)

I'm sure since it was the newest hardware it was the best.
