to have your whole business depend on another business is frightening.

Can you name a business that depends on zero other businesses? What a completely wild take.

I think specifically hiring somebody because of their race is not just problematic but outright racist. I don't care if you are doing it because you want to underpay them or because you just dislike their race.

If somebody decided he wanted more white people because he prefers whites, that would be discrimination. Nobody denies that, but when the races are swapped, suddenly it is nuanced? Give me a break!

risenshinetech · a year ago
The "nuanced" argument you're responding to at least gives a window into why LLMs all talk about this same sort of nonsense and have this same bias. This kind of thinking is absolutely rampant these days -- especially on Reddit, which makes up a large portion of the training data.

I must not be the target audience for this kind of thing, but I really don't get it. The few times I've opened HN today I've seen this at the top, and the number of points has been higher. I've opened it 3 times, and clicked the button, and some other icons showed up below. The first time I didn't open even bother to mouse over the icons, so I didn't know you'd be buying things. I closed before I got to 50 stimulations. The second time, I did hover over the icons showing up, and clicked a couple, and nothing seemed to happen other than spending stimulation, so I closed before 100. I just did this a third time as it's now over 1200 points, and I really just don't understand what is going on. What am I missing?
risenshinetech · a year ago
I think this is a scenario where if you have to ask, you'll never know. Perhaps, ironically, there just wasn't enough immediate stimulation for you to continue...

Yes, I don’t question the usefulness of the project by any means. To be frank, I’m personally very interested in it—I studied celestial mechanics at university many years ago and am still curious about simulations.

The graph on the chart I shared suggests that the peak of contributions was a couple of years ago, with occasional changes since then. This doesn’t make much sense to me, as the rendering quality looks great (at least in the videos—I’ll try the software a bit later), and it’s head and shoulders above what the scientific community is currently using.

risenshinetech · a year ago
You can't imagine that someone working on something like this would slow down as the work neared completion? Why must a piece of software / code constantly be changing? What's your specific concern? You're making a very strong claim that the "project has stalled" without any real evidence. Furthermore, the project "stalling" makes it less... what, exactly?

The article absolutely does not support the claim made in the title. Either the writer did an awful job of summarizing the findings, or the findings are very weak.

This entire article is clickbait.

- Headline "My new car has a mysterious and undocumented switch".

No, this is not a new car. This is a used car. Finding undocumented switches in a vehicle someone else owned is very common. People modify their cars all the time. Finding an undocumented switch in a new car would be wild.

- "And that’s how the search comes to an end. After a bit of perseverance I figured out what it is."

You literally took your car to a dealership, and the mechanic told you what it was. This ENTIRE ARTICLE boils down to this statement. You did the bare minimum to investigate what it was: took the panel off and confirmed that the wires went __somewhere__.

How does this get upvoted so heavily on Hacker News?

Seemed like it would be interesting to read, but I slammed the back button once the butterfly (wtf), blur effect, and thin grey font on a white background overwhelmed me.

    > riddled with state machines
Why is this bad? Normally, state machines are easy to reason about.

risenshinetech · a year ago
Please describe "normally". State machines can turn into nightmares, just like any design pattern used poorly.

I think the thing that I’m most amazed by - and this setup is truly amazing - is the fact that you’ve got a group of friends to enjoy this with. Good for you; this looks like a blast, and I can only imagine how fun that’d be, compared to years of purely solo gaming.

I think it's a pretty sad state of affairs if the most amazing thing about this is having friends.

How to make your life super easy if shopping for a bike:

- 1 1/8 steerer tube, or maybe tapered

- Threadless a-head headset in any common SHIS type. Threaded ones won’t last as long.

- QR or common thru-axle

- Any common BB standard (threadless ones are actually fine but require a well made frame, and you’d be surprised how many expensive frames are not well made)

- Always a round seat post and get 27.2mm if you can. Bigger if you care about dropper posts

- Rim brakes are fine unless you are doing serious off road. If going disc, hydraulics offer great performance for the price.

- Flat bar shifting components are much more interchangeable and better value that drop bar!

- If going drop bar, consider older 2x11 speed mechanical equipment. It’s much cheaper and it was competitive at a pro level not so long ago.

- External cable routing!

- Aluminium is uncool, but it represents a sweet spot in terms of weigh/cost/durability

- Tyre volume, not frame material, is the most important factor in comfort

- Never buy a bike that doesn’t fit you

These tips won’t get you the best bike (in terms of absolute performance) but it will be reliable, easy to fix and good value.
