Love to hear your omissions.

And as for absolute shit? Yeah, there's Andy Warhol on there.

Somehow I swirled around for a minute or so and didn't see anything I would want to watch.

"This gallery features a collection of the 50,000 most popular* movies according to TMDB"

Yeah, there's the problem. I went to the TMDB site and tried sorting by popularity, rating … all I got was a whole bunch of recent films that look like all the reasons the film industry is crashing (you know, the kind of stuff you would see in a Red Box when they were still a thing).

If you really don't know what to watch you could do a lot worse than checking off films on this list (the 1001 Movies to See Before You Die):

https://1001films.fandom.com/wiki/The_List

(And you have already seen a number of them I expect.)

Elitist? Maybe. But if you can actually get through the list (I've been at it, casually, for several years now) you'll feel like you have acquired a film school degree.

I think it's fine to watch "8 ½" and hate it — at least you'll know that you hate it now. But it would be sad if you never saw "La Strada" because you thought all of Fellini's films were impenetrable.

"Marty", "Stella Dallas", "The Hustler" — just a few great American films that came to mind that I would have otherwise missed…

But if the latest Guardian of the Pirate's of the Marvel Universe movie are your cup of tea you probably have no problem finding something to watch anyway and can pass on "The List".

Strange list. Some great films, some absolute shit and glaring omissions [1].

There isnt. Its a crazy example of what is happening here.

To use a real world example take this "EU deal" that Trump did. Everyone is talking like its already taken effect. But the reality is the EU just handshake agreed to this, but at the end of the day all of the member states have to rattify it. And if states dont or if there are arguements made the whole thing gets tossed.

I just wish people would say that they dont understand how the EU works. At some point some Dutch mayor is going to say that the inernet should be free, and "tech journalists" are going to write articles talking about how all EU citizens will have Fibre cables connected to them at all times.

> I just wish people would say that they dont understand how the EU works.

Just look at the Brexit vote for an example of how little people understand the EU and how it works.

It's shocking to me that Microsoft aren't heavily involved with the project considering it's one of the fundamental frameworks for releasing software on Windows.

I've had the displeasure of using Wix and it's an incredibly complicated and poorly documented platform that had us reaching for paid competitors in order to get our installer shipped.

I realized shortly after that it's not really Wix's fault. Windows is squarely to blame for the mess that is writing a workable Windows installer. The paid competitors had a lot of the same issues as the open source frameworks.

> it's an incredibly complicated and poorly documented

So much this. I was interested in using WiX, but it's just impenetrable for a noob, and any "beginners" guides were either hugely out of date or just assumed you understood what GUID you should be using and if it was important or not to change the example they gave. Quickly gave up. :(

I see hyperbole is misunderstood here.

Calling a 9 kg chain a "necklace" is a bit misleading. It makes it seem like it could have gone in unnoticed. "medical episode" is also very vague, what was the actual cause of death?

> I wonder if "beamer" is a "real" German word or one they borrowed from English in a weird way.

It’s both :) See also: “Handy” for mobile phone.

richrichardsson · a month ago
I guess I meant if "beam" is an original German word, and then does "beamer" make sense grammatically in German.

Of course given the history of English it's not unlikely that "beam" came from German roots and they have the same meaning.

I'm from Croatia but I don't send money abroad, I only use credit cards and banks locally. As far as I can see from our local banks' websites, they implement SEPA standards. There must be some sort of misunderstanding or error.
richrichardsson · a month ago
Perhaps is because it's a payment to an OBRT account?

Banking in Croatia is like UK banking 40 years ago, or at least it is with Erste. Charged even just to have the account.

They even charge me to send me an email to tell me I logged in to the online banking.
