Sovereigns can withdraw from agreements. It's the whole point.

The only thing you can do about it is shaming them, sanctioning them, going to war if you really care, ...

rileymat2 · 7 hours ago
And importantly, not agree to future agreements. Outside of war, that's the ultimate punishment.

Does this really work? I would think the ping time would not be dominated by speed of light, but by number of hops, and connection quality.

As a hypothetical example, an IP in a New York City data center is likely to have a shorted ping to a London data center, than a rural New York IP address.

rileymat2 · 2 days ago
The speed of light sets a minimum bound even if you don't account for that, and these are coming up less than the minimum bound.

It also reminds me of this old story: https://web.mit.edu/jemorris/humor/500-miles

There's no such thing as accessibility. Accessibility is just usability.

Toasts have poor usability because its easy to miss them. This makes them bad for everyone, regardless of screen reader.

rileymat2 · 7 days ago
This is not strictly true some accessibility choices can harm usability for those that don’t need that affordance, if it is not configurable.

The idea is that if their salary does not actually cover the expenses of living in and traveling to DC to do their job, you are limiting the pool of potential congressional representatives to those who are independently wealthy or who are finding other ways to make money via their position.

Paying enough to cover the expenses of the job isn't a solution to all problems, just kind of a minimum bar if we want a normal person to be able do the job without relying on other income sources.

rileymat2 · 12 days ago
At first I am sympathetic to this idea, but the act of running is so expensive and time consuming, it does not matter what the salary will be, the pool is already limited.

You need to be well connected and/or wealthy before you even start.

And the current norm that the trillion dollar companies have lobbied for is that you can train on copyrighted material all you want so that's the reality we are living in. Everything ever published is all theirs.
rileymat2 · 18 days ago
All theirs, if they properly obtained the copy.

This is a big difference that already has bit them.

To my understanding, if the material is publicly available or obtained legally (i.e., not pirated), then training a model with it falls under fair use, at least in the US and some other jurisdictions.

If the training is established as fair use, the underlying license doesn't really matter. The term you added would likely be void or deemed unenforceable if someone ever brought it to a court.

rileymat2 · 18 days ago
It depends on the license terms, if you have a license that allowed you to get it legally where you agreed to those terms it would not be legal for that purpose.

But this is all grey area… https://www.authorsalliance.org/2023/02/23/fair-use-week-202...

But once in court, you would probably get that thrown out. The key problem is that we haven't instituted consequences for that sort of police behavior.
rileymat2 · 25 days ago
If you go to court, pay a lawyer for the hours for it, instead of pleading down. In many cases you have already lost just based on the accusation.

Suspicious behavior is not a crime, and law enforcement is required to have a reasonable, articulable suspicion of a crime in order to detain people.

From the sound of the article, they flag the person for local police that then can almost always find a reason to pull someone over as a pretext.

my understanding from reading this kind of threads is that there is no real way to enforce it and the provider makes no guarantees, as your usage can outpace the system that is handling the accounting and shutoff
rileymat2 · a month ago
That sounds like an architecture choice? One that would cause less revenue on the AWS side, with a conflicting incentive there.

I'd make the case that the resignations are a good thing. It shows a commitment to journalism as a profession.
