I find it amazing that this is treated as such a trivial achievement, with an attitude as if any one of us could have done this. Now back to our regularly scheduled social media apps.

Yeah for some reason when SpaceX did it we couldn’t stop hearing about it. When OldTech does it, nobody cares.

I don't think that's google's problem. Smart talented people are usually more concerned with things like pace of work, culture, freedom to do what they want to do, impact, etc. Working in a large company is absolutely stifling.

Google has all the top talent and was caught flat footed by smaller, nimbler organizations.

rainyMammoth · 2 years ago
It's all of those things.

To put it simply, Google is not that attractive anymore. They are the IBM of our generation.

They pay to display the ad. Think of a highway ad. If you sell a highway ad placement and then cover it with a big blanket (with maybe another ad on it) so nobody sees it, that would be a serious case of fraud.

So if you tell them the ad has been displayed so you get the video, but no ad was displayed for you, then that is a form of fraud. I don't think that would hold in court since it is such a petty crime, but it is still fraud. You lie to their server so that you can see the video without ads, that is fraud.

bad analogy. An Adblock would be similar to blocking part of my windshield so I don't see the highway ads. No fraud there.

The fact that civilization now runs on ads is insane to me. How did we get here?
rainyMammoth · 2 years ago
we glorified companies like Google.

I can't believe the number of people here that think YouTube has some right to access my eyes and attention.

No one is forcing them to stream me free data. What I do with the data they send me is none of their business. I've never consented or given them permission to access me.

A lot of those people work for adtechs. Once you realize that 50% of bigtech is relying almost entirely on ads, a lot of people are simply advocating for keeping their FAANG salaries by forcing us to watch debilitating ads.

I just pay for Premium instead of grifting. Planetary-scale server farms and video hosting is not free.
rainyMammoth · 2 years ago
following your logic, people should actively engaged with ads if not they are grifting. Please tell me you work for google?

Have switched from a 90$/month ATT plan to a 30$/month Mint plan, all unlimited.

Yeah the coverage is maybe slightly worse and I'm sure that I get "deprioritized" but worth the 720$/year of savings.

Kids are a distraction to intense work. At the same time, becoming a parent is a potential growth experience that is unrivaled and brings value. Healthy kids are a value to society. Non-parents benefit from a society full of healthy children. Parents should be rewarded--or at least equally as compensated--with pay and/or status that tracks with the successes those unburdened with parenting achieve.
rainyMammoth · 5 years ago
Most people have kids because they see it as a positive personal trade off (when you are older and you have a family that will come to visit you for example). Most people are not thinking about the benefits to society when they decide to have kids.
