You gotta love a society which persistently makes the world a worse and worse place and then complains when people don't want to have sex or have kids.

I'm not one of those weirdos who can't see that materially in some superficial ways, our lives are better than ever: medicine, toys, entertainment, and a lot of other stuff, better than ever. Not only that, I can even acknowledge that capitalism is what has provided this bounty to us.

But what it also does is underline all the time that you, personally are not "adequate" unless you want to be the kind of person who hustles all the time, who is seeking an angle or an alpha, who wants to be an entrepreneur of some kind. I think this just doesn't appeal to most people the message society is sending loud and clear is that if you just want to have a nice life and you don't want to constantly figure out new ways to improve your capital, you'll get left behind. I think for many people this doesn't seem like a cool world to have a baby in.

Even the purely materialistic improvements have negative externalities which the rich western countries could mostly ignore but cannot anymore. I'm obviously talking the climate catastrophe plus the huge bunch of political problems.

The rich don't need the bigger spender to have 100% chance of winning.

It is sufficient that both sides need the big money to even have a shot.

"I'm seriously thinking that the CCP encourage this with maybe the hope of externalizing the cost of the Great Firewall to the rest of the world. If China scrapes content, that's fine as far as the CCP goes; If it's blocked, that's fine by the CCP too (I say, as I adjust my tin foil hat)."

Then turn the tables on them and make the Great Firewall do your job! Just choose a random snippet about illegal Chinese occupation of Tibet or human rights abuses of Uyghur people each time you generate a page and insert it as a breaker between paragraphs. This should get you blocked in no time :)

We block China and Russia. DDOS attacks and other hack attempts went down by 95%.

We have no chinese users/customers so in theory this does not effect business at all. Also russia is sanctioned and our russian userbase does not actually live in russia, so blocking russia did not effect users at all.

How did you choose where to get the IP addresses to block? I guess I'm mostly asking where this problem (i.e. "get all IPs for country X") is on the scale from "obviously solved" to "hard and you need to play catch up constantly".

I did a quick search and found a few databases but none of them looks like the obvious winner.

praptak commented on SQLite (with WAL) doesn't do `fsync` on each commit under default settings   avi.im/blag/2025/sqlite-f... · Posted by u/Bogdanp

Calling fsync on each commit makes it slower, doesn't it?

Its an extra syscall. It depends on the use-case if its needed or not

praptak · 6 days ago
That's why big DBs do group commits, trading latency for throughput.

What about the employees you had to let go to cover the shortfall? No damages there either?
praptak · 8 days ago
Same category - bad but not enough to warrant four years jail time. Unless you are prepared to argue four years in jail for unlawful termination.

That’s an insane take. Financial damage isn’t a problem for you? What if someone targeted you personally or your business?
praptak · 8 days ago
I don't buy this equivalence of financial damage to a person with financial damage to a business.

If I had a business its finances would be separate from my personal finance using limited liability, so even if someone destroyed 100% of its value, it would only be no return on investment for me - sad and bad but totally not equivalent to losing all my personal money.

HOAs are benevolent dictatorships. That's supposed to be better than democracy. What could possibly go wrong?
praptak · 9 days ago
We don't have a procedure to reliably establish a benevolent dictatorship.

Is there an open source tool to make flash games/animations? I only ever hear of adobe stuff
praptak · 12 days ago
Flash is proprietary(#), so nobody bothered. When I contributed to Ruffle I think buying a second hand Adobe Flash Professional CS 6 was the recommended way. Also some subscriptions that you can buy from Adobe cover producing Flash format.

(#)Some exclusions exist which made Ruffle possible (for example https://github.com/adobe/avmplus is open sourced) but it's not like everything is fully open.
