I find walking can be a similar experience. It really crystalized for me this summer while walking the Camino de Santiago because of the effect of exploring another country. When you walk, you see everything. The world is huge. Everything is slower, higher fidelity, and for me, richer. You can spend an entire day walking from one town to another. Think of everything you will see! Compare this to driving. Driving is like compression. You could drive between the same two towns in less than an hour. You may see many beautiful things while driving, but the experience is fleeting and momentary. You will miss so many details along the way.

As always, there are tradeoffs, and you can't walk everywhere or always have these types of mindful experiences. On the other hand, life is short and perhaps paradoxically, slower experiences can yield richer days.

Hey dang, don't worry. It's just a site for reading articles and reacting to them.

Enjoy your deserved sleep and if for a couple of hours it's down, so be it.

Thanks for your continued service!

100%

Though I will say, HN is a pretty great source of information about major outages like the recent AWS and Cloudflare issues. I had a moment this morning where I thought, oh, is there a larger issue and then, oh, HN is down, huh, the next option is so far down my list that it's going to take me a moment to think of it.

I hope that serves as a testament to how great this site and the community is. Thanks for all your hard work keeping it that way!

I was hoping this was a mini 5G cell tower that connected to the network, so you could have good 5G service inside.

I need a portable mini 5G cell tower in a backpack form factor so that I can have 5G service indoors no matter where I am.

You wouldn't believe the amount of shit that runs on Excel.
powvans · 4 months ago
Yes. I once interviewed a developer who’s previous job was maintaining the .NET application that used an Excel sheet as the brain for decisions about where to drill for oil on the sea floor. No one understood what was in the Excel sheet. It was built by a geologist who was long gone. The engineering team understood the inputs and outputs. That’s all they needed to know.

I use stickers designed for dimming LEDs. They’re almost like a thick window tint cut into various shapes. Dim enough to stop the LED from being annoying but you can still see its status.

A little more expensive, but they look a little nicer too.

You can buy a sheet of LED blocking stickers on Amazon for a few bucks. I keep some in my suitcase and leave every hotel room a little better than I found it.

Yeah, I see you're right. I had in my head it was around a $200 fee?
powvans · 5 months ago
You aren’t wrong. Up until a couple of weeks ago it was $299. Once. Forever. That was the whole idea. Very cool that they open sourced it. MIT license too.

powvans commented on Pontevedra, Spain declares its entire urban area a "reduced traffic zone"   greeneuropeanjournal.eu/m... · Posted by u/robtherobber

This is really amazing to see trending on HN. I spent a couple days in Pontevedra this summer while walking the Camino de Santiago. It was absolutely delightful and what I experienced aligns with the article. The old town was filled with wide streets almost exclusively for walking, cafes and restaurants that sprawled into plazas, and people young and old enjoying the car free public space. It was one of the first stops on our trip through Spain and as an American it was stunning.

In America the contrast is stark. Most of our public spaces prioritize cars instead of people. I’m lucky to live near the beltline in Atlanta. It’s incredible to see how people flock to the beltline for a car free experience. It’s such a rare thing in America. Where it exists you can see that there is tremendous demand for it. Supply on the other hand is unfortunately very difficult to deliver.

You can do that!

There is an AWS IAM Identity Center option for login as well: https://kiro.dev/docs/reference/auth-methods/#aws-iam-identi...

We really need to add some more step by step docs for setting this up, but it's very similar to the Amazon Q Developer integration with AWS IAM Identity Center if you are familiar with that: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/amazonq/latest/qdeveloper-ug/sec...

Nice, I’ll have to put my (employer’s) money where my mouth is and try it out tomorrow. Thanks!

At this time Kiro is a standalone product that does not require an AWS account at all. Kiro is powered by Bedrock behind the scenes, but it has a layer of abstraction between Kiro and Bedrock, which includes system prompts and additional functionality. I can definitely take this as a feature request though!
powvans · 7 months ago
If this integrated with AWS for billing, usage, and IAM purposes it would be a no brainer to have my team trying this out today.

Here’s something many people probably don’t know.

I live in a west-Eu country with several well-defined language borders. Each time we cross a border (on holiday), the youtube ads change language. When I’m logged in. I don’t have a driver’s license, yet the most common ad I get is for second hand cars. I’m in a relationship, yet I regularly get ads for dating sites. I have a job, get ads for jobhunting advice. And the other day I got an add specifically for people born before my birth-year minus one.

YouTube’s ads are on the same level as Spotify’s nagging for their subscription: it’s meant to annoy users into buying their ad-free plan. They use real ads as a thin veneer.

powvans · 8 months ago
Well, it works. Unfortunately it doesn’t remove sponsored content in the videos. I’m paying for an ad free experience, but I’m still hearing about AC1. Annoying.
