How do I watch this? I signed up, registered, etc. and then I click `Room 1` or `Room 2` and I just get sent back to the home page.

I tried too and the same thing happened. But it doesn't start until tonight (really the first talk is tomorrow) so maybe that is why?
postoak commented on An app called Libby and the big business of library e-books   newyorker.com/news/annals... · Posted by u/samizdis

Libby as a library app is a PITA. The latest update made it somewhat better, but the UI is still horrible. E.g., it has 5 menu buttons at the bottom that you can use to navigate between different parts of the app, _unless_ you press the center one, then the menu vanishes and you have to know that now you have to somehow swipe left, which will dump you in different menu point. You leave book info boxes by swiping down.

My biggest peeve is that I cannot simply look for a book across the different libraries I have access to. I have to select each one individually and repeat the search several times to find out that the book I am looking for is not available.

Finally, I wish there was a simple list where I can store books I am interested in without committing to it. The tag system can be used that way but is unpleasantly wonky. Why not make that a menu button rather than the 'timeline', which gives me an overview of the books I signed up for, loaned, and return dates for, I assume, the past 100 years. Why would I need that information as a top level button?

postoak · 5 years ago
I use the Library Chrome Extension. If you look up a book on Amazon or some other book search sites it will add a info box about whether libraries that you have added have a book available (or all checked out) and the estimated wait and number of copies. You can add a bunch of libraries. Yes, it should be in the overdrive/libby apps/sites but this is the closest I've found to search many libraries.

I think this would just rely on the ransomers to have the ransom paid to the correct address, which would be tied to a smart contract that'd take care of divvying up any money coming in and forwarding it to other addresses. If money comes in, the work was done, so distribute it, all automatic.

Aside from bugs in the contract, or opsec concerns, the main risk (for the saboteur) would be the ransom folks directing the victim to pay some other address that wasn't part of the smart contract, so no money ever comes into it. Really, it's only marginally more reliable than just depending on them to pay you when they get paid.

postoak · 5 years ago
That is interesting, how would the employee trust that the criminal organization would indicate the correct address (that triggers the smart contract) to the hostage company?

I've never understood the nitty gritty details on how that's supposed to work. Certainly you'd still need both parties to tell the contract that the work was done, right? Otherwise, just one party acting fraudulently could release the funds to the wrong person.
postoak · 5 years ago
Yes, there in smart contracts there are things called "oracles" which are like 3rd party indicators or sensors that something happened. I don't see how anyone besides the hackers could indicate that.

He mentions another project, https://arrangedmarriages.co/

>We arrange marriages for millennials and zoomers tired of endless dating.

>It's free to apply (takes about 4 minutes). We only ask for payment when we find you a spouse.

Any takers?

Are you asking me to marry you?

Since I could only find one mention of the word taxi in the article, can someone in the comments explain to me the specifics of how taxi companies can be profitable (both in cities with and without medallions) whereas Uber can't?
postoak · 5 years ago
I thought it was kind of funny that the author said Taxi companies are only one app away from feature parity with Uber. That is a pretty important feature that they aren't likely to develop quickly if they haven't been bothered to do it already. Not a fan of uber, but the taxi experience is pretty unreliable and bad and will get worse if uber fails and taxis have another monopoly.

We'll need an agency of people inspectors, authorized to enter residences and institutions to count people.
postoak · 5 years ago
If we hire everyone to be a people inspector we can use the employment records as the census.

Sure. I'm not saying this is good. I'm saying there are a lot of kneejerk arguments being made that directly conflict with Apple's description of the system.
postoak · 5 years ago
The problem is that you have to trust their description when the technology is a black box. And trust that it won't change in the future.

You still seem to be suggesting that a) a very large amount of light is required in a classroom setting and, b) it is beyond our current technology to achieve this level of light via LED lighting without sunlight provided by windows.

Which on the face of it, seems totally absurd. Things such as Night School, and schools/offices near the poles for example, exist. Is there something more specific that you're actually saying?

postoak · 5 years ago
I'm guessing they aren't saying the light is necessary for school/learning, but that it is unknown whether it is needed for human development. Most of the time mammals and humans evolved they probably spent a substantial amount of time outdoors and if kids spend the majority of the day without sufficient light it could effect their development. Of course there probably isn't sufficient research to know, but it seems pretty clear that sunlight exposure affects sleep and mood which are pretty important for the brain to function well.

Comments like this always remind me of the interview with some kids dumpster diving behind some grocery store that I read many years ago: “Look at all those suckers going into the store to buy stuff with money, when you can just pick it up for free behind the store. Idiots!”
postoak · 5 years ago
That is a funny quote, but I don't think it's the same as questioning the idea that everyone needs to have kids. Going to the dumpster is a bad idea if you value your health for everyone, but not having kids isn't clearly bad unless you only think of having kids in economic/religious terms (need to produce more workers/believers, or having support in old age).
