I've never met an Irish person that "blames" the modern English for what our ancestors did. I might be talking out of turn, but I think they mainly just want us to acknowledge what happened and not downplay what the British did.

Look at JetSetWilly's reply above. He's saying the British should be proud of their role in the Irish Famine and is being upvoted for it.

So no -- this isn't undisputed.

I think JetSetWilly's opinion is not the normal in England, at least around people my age.

I was always taught what a lot of people here say, that the potato blight was a natural disaster, but the British government took it as an "opportunity" and purposely did not do enough to help.

In my personal opinion, I think that few people would have died if the British government stepped up, not the many millions that died as a result of their inaction. As an English person, I'm not proud of what our government did to Ireland over the years. Ireland is a beautiful country with great people, and it took a long time even to get the relationship between the UK and Ireland to where it is now.

I only recently moved from a 6-year old LG flagship phone to a shiny new Galaxy, and the performance difference is staggering. It shouldn't be - that was a very high-end phone at release, it's not that old, and it still works like new. I know it's not just my phone, because the Galaxy S9s I use to test code have the same struggles.

I would like to have seen Amazon in the tests. IME Amazon's website is among the absolute worst of the worst on mobile devices more than ~4 years old. Amazon was the only site I accessed regularly that bordered on unusable, even with relatively recent high-end mobile hardware.

Did you try disabling JavaScript on Amazon? It actually doesn't function too badly. I know, I know, you shouldn't need to do it and I agree.

I don't. I still neuter Firefox (LibreWolf, mostly.) and disable all the sync nonsense.

So, you trust some other random people with your privacy instead then?

I mentioned to a colleague today the sweater I was wearing was 12 years old (discussing this exact fast fashion subject). He said "you just kept it in the closet for 12 years?" - Nope, it's my fav sweater to wear. I handwash it and hang dry it, as I do all my clothes, and it was made in Portugal from quality materials, works out to $35 a year (~$400 sweater).

I bought a wool jumper from Next about 7 years ago for probably around £30, and it's lasted me until now, and will probably last another 7 years.

I don't really take any special care, just put it in the washing machine every now and again.

The article states that the change is due later. I know someone who received a BRP just days ago and was told that the electronic visa system isn't yet available. So the BRP has always been and remains mandatory for travel, until these changes take effect.

As far as I know they are live. People are using the share codes for renting, etc. On /r/ukvisa I've seen a few stories already.

Anyone else use YouTube as basically background noise? When I'm working I live putting on some ASMR and just listening to it in the background.

I find it less distracting then music or podcasts.

> To combat this, grocery retailers in Europe, such as Aldi, Tesco and Lidl, have coin locks on their carts.

Thankfully I haven’t been to a Tesco in as long as I can remember where the trolleys have been coin locked.

Coin locks were made for a different era. When everything is contactless, there’s little reason to carry cash. If you aren’t paying for things in cash, you don’t have change you can use for a trolley either.

Accacin · 2 years ago
Odd, the large Tesco near me has no coin required for the trolleys. However, the Lidl and Sainsbury's do. I don't carry cash, but I keep a few pound coins in the car just in case.

At least with Sains', if you ask the security guard near the door he'll unlock one for you anyway :)

I've already heard stories of people coming back to the UK from a trip abroad, and UK border staff insisted to see their BRP even though it's acceptable now for it to be digital. I'm assuming it's going to be a right pain in the arse for my wife when she comes back to the UK from visiting family abroad.

Cardiff, United Kingdom

Pros: It’s in the “West”

Cons: It’s cold, expensive, and all the kids are vaping and drinking. There was a stabbing on the street on my first week here just 10 minutes away from where I live. Even though GDP per capital is higher (but actually unexpectedly low), purchasing power is much lower.

Context: I come from Malaysia and have always idolized the west as some sort of paradise. Even for lower pay, I’d much rather go back to Malaysia in a few years. Tips to those that were in the same situation as I was (got some money through luck and considered coming to the UK for university): You’ll probably be happier staying where education is cheap, days are warm, and skies are clear.

Yeah, no crime in Malaysia for sure!
