Nice, but quite the short list (iTunes, Safari would be nice).

A lot of experimentation went on with the iTunes icon in particular (and iTunes in general). It was the UI playground for new ideas before they would release in the next OS version.

https://www.versionmuseum.com/history-of/itunes-app

As you can see the icon changed multiple times even within the same year or same OS version.

Most people think of the brushed metal, but I've always liked the iTunes 10 dalliance with vertical window controls as a good example of this.

I feed most of my questions/code to 4o, Gemini, o3-pro (in that order). By the time I’ve read through 4o, Gemini is ready. Etc.

It’s the progressive jpg download of 2025. You can short circuit after the first model which gives a good enough response.

Do you have any specific tooling for querying all three at once beyond just copy paste?

Steve Hayman, long time NeXT/Apple employee who just retired last week from Apple having started in 1993 with NeXT.

His WebObjects demo from 2001 is one of the most entertaining tech demos I've ever seen

The idea of any official Apple presentation today beginning with a humorous rendition of _God Save the Queen_ is so absurd I can't help but smile at what we've lost.

The rackmount Mac Pro is for A/V studios, not datacenters.

Don't forget CI/CD farms for iOS builds, although I think it's much more cost effective to just make Minis or Studios work, despite their nonstandard formfactor

This looks great. If this Python implementation of the FindMy API actually works, it would be a major technology quality-of-life improvement for me. I hope Apple lets it stay alive.

Everyone who shares location with me does so over Find My, and my family insists on using AirTags. As a 100% desktop Linux and mobile Android user, it is one of the few things that I always need to remote in to my Mac Mini to access because there are no x-platform FindMy apps and the FindMy iCloud web app does not have feature parity to the macOS and iOS apps. One of a long list of offenses where Apple refuses to make things easy for x-platform friend groups and families. Very annoying.

Even within Apple's platforms, there's pretty limited support for automation -- you can say "Siri find my keys" but there's no App Intents / Shortcuts support for automating anything within Find My (AFAIK), which is a bit disappointing.

Jobs and Ive had their head scratchers. Like the Magic Mouse with the bottom charging port, or the Cube with all its cables coming in from the bottom.

I was thinking their version might be making the Apple logo itself t beinghe [overly] touch sensitive power button, like the Cube.

The typical .edu discount from Apple on largish purchases is about $100, regardless of whether that's a $600 final tag or a $2000 final tag. So, somewhere between 14% and 5%.

If Apple sells 50% of Macs to the .edu discount market, that's a difference to you of somewhere between 2.5% and 7%.

Or, you can accept that Apple's prices are not set by the market so much as by their marketing department.

I believe build-to-order upgrades are also discounted, so it may not be a fixed discount.

“If only they didn't put the power button on the bottom.”

While I think Apple was off the rocker on this particular decision, I do respect their org structure that allows this type of decision to occur. Believe me, there are companies where a dozen people or more would weigh in and prevent an unpopular choice. Consensus sometimes hinders a desired result (both good and bad).

After buying one, I actually like it. I know exactly where it is, and can reach for it by feel more easily; I could never tell you whether the power button was on the left or right side of the old Mini/Studio without checking each time.

It's also larger, more satisfying tactile/clicky, and concave compared to the old button (which was rounded into the outside curve, not particularly be satisfying to press). I think the old one being so small and indistinct feeling, and also being so close to the cables meant you would never try to reach for it blindly. You do have to lift it up a bit, but the device is so light you can do that with the same finger you're using to push the button (of course you need another finger to push the top of the mini _down_).

I think neither old nor new button were really meant to be used more than occasionally, since you typically wake your Mac from the keyboard, and both designs reflect that. I do sympathize that the new version could be less flexible in different mounting positions though.

(that said, I'd bet Jobs/Ive Apple would never have shipped this, unless the height underneath was exactly perfect for even the larger fingers to fit)

I’ve been using an M1 iMac as my main home computer (with 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD) and have zero reason to upgrade. I’ve loved it. Exactly what I need, though I offload a lot of home server type tasks to a big tower PC, including messing with local AI stuff.

BUT a new hockey puck Mac mini that shared a screen with my gaming PC would be a nice space-saver. If only the studio display could switch inputs—using macOS on a curved gaming monitor seems weird.

There are Thunderbolt 4 KVMs now (can't speak to any myself, but they exist!). DSC will give you quite a bit of spare bandwidth with the Studio Display.

Since this thread seems to be about niche asks for pro users, despite the product being targeted towards casual users who want an easy out of the box experience, I'll add my own to the mix.

I'd love a bigger/better screen on these, specifically an ultrawide variety. An iMac Pro with an 8k ultrawide would be a near-instant purchase for me. I find the ultrawide form factor so good for productivity. I love the apple "it just works" approach to their hardware, so if something was fully integrated I'd jump on it immediately.

Today I use a 49" CRG9, but the input and connection setup is somewhat finicky. Not a huge blocker, but it would be lovely to be able to simplify.

Incidentally, it was observed that the new iMac can support an external 8K 120Hz display: https://x.com/vadimyuryev/status/1850929080281321899
