nntwozz commented on What is the nicest thing a stranger has ever done for you?   louplummer.lol/nice-stran... · Posted by u/speckx

My family lived in an apartment near a cemetery when I was 10, the complex stretched along the old cemetery wall made out of massive granite stones. Nearly all of the people living in the complex were elderly.

When I came home from school I would sometimes kick ball against the wall and I could spot old people looking at me from the windows, they would stare at me for a long time.

One summer an elderly woman came out on the balcony and invited me to come up for ice cream, my parents had warned me to beware of friendly strangers but my judgement at the time was that it was a neighbor so they must be friendly.

I entered and to my surprise the woman wasn't alone, she lived with her husband who was sitting in an armchair and they both looked to be in their 80s. They seemed very happy to have me, we sat down on the balcony and I remember feeling a bit awkward as these two strangers looked and smiled at me as I was eating the ice cream.

I don't think they ever had any children.

This memory sometimes resurfaces, and now at 41 I realize how sad and wonderful this was at the same time.

We moved away shortly after and I never saw them again.

There’s been rumors of Apple working on M-chips that have the GPU and CPU as discrete chiplets. The original rumor said this would happen with the M5 Pro, so it’s potentially on the roadmap.

Theoretically they could farm out the GPU to another company but it seems like they’re set on owning all of the hardware designs.

Apple always strives for complete vertical integration.

SJ loved to quote Alan Kay:

"People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware."

Qualcomm are the latest on the chopping block, history repeating itself.

If I were a betting man I'd say Apple's never going back.

Society is like poorly written software with lots of patches, new features are added (social media) and then stuff randomly breaks. A fix is eventually deployed, sometimes the fix works; sometimes the fix causes more bugs.

And so we move forward, like Gordon Freeman in unforeseen consequences.

Nobody said nothing as social media and the attention economy took over the world.

macOS Tahoe has declared war on app icons with distinctive shapes.

No silhouettes. If your icon isn't a squircle, it will be shrunk to fit inside a default shape. The penalty box.

https://lapcatsoftware.com/articles/2025/6/2.html

The loss of icon silhouettes is a big step down in usability. Erases decades of design guidelines.

https://pxlnv.com/blog/roundrect-dictator/

Frankly it's senseless.

Insane but still working legacy workaround:

macOS isn't fun anymore.

First we lost the pinstripes, then brushed aluminium; then we lost colors in the sidebar icons. Then they made everything flat.

Finally we lost the background and legibility.

Pepe prayge now than Alan is out that things will improve.

We need to get back to Dieter Rams 10 principles for good design.

Look at this astonishing graph:

https://kottke.org/25/12/an-astonishing-graph

For most of human history, around 50% of children used to die before they reached the end of puberty. In 2020, that number is 4.3%. It’s 0.3% in countries like Japan & Norway.

Came here looking for this comment.

I wonder how much price increase it takes for Apple to raise theirs.

“People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.” — Alan Kay

It's ironic after fighting the good fight for so long and finally making their own hardware that Apple should fall on their own sword with software now.

I've been loving Apple since Tiger, I'm still on Sequoia and iOS 18.

Pepe prayge for the 27-releases to be another Snow Leopard as rumored.
