> In 2024, X (formerly Twitter) reported profits of $1.25 billion, which is about double its highest previous profit of $682 million in 2021.

People believing what they want to belive.

Not to mention that you talk about revenue and users, because it's hard to deny that technically Twitter is still working just fine, and now even has some new features, while in the past they were coasting tweaking their html for years.

On this very websites, all the "experts" in the industry were bidding how quickly Twitter will collapse after Musk fired all these "irreplaceable" people. Same ones that after 15 year still don't understand how Bitcoin works, or how it can have beneficial impact on the energy market.

Twitter revenue is down 48% since musk acquisition, also due to interest and other costs they operated at a net loss in 2024, Not a profit. Who is really choosing what they want to believe?

I've switched sides on this issue. I do think LLMs will reduce headcount across tech. Smaller teams will take on more features and less code will be written by hand. It'll be easier to run a startup, freelance or experiment with projects.

He said “partly” — seems reasonable that throwing nazi salutes around might have a partial impact on declining sales?
penjelly · 7 months ago
sales were trending down significantly in Europe even before the salute though.

Same experience with my 2022 Model Y:

Have yet not had a single problem for two years.

Surely the problem lies in a high variance in the production of later models.

Like when you visit a stellar restaurant and come back years later to realize the magic sauce was a chef who left.

Also, yes, it sounds risky to buy a car without being able to drive it back when it immediately breaks. I can also see myself as a victim of that because of experiences like yours and mine: Teslas are the most purchased EVs, they're everywhere, surely you'd know if their reputation is tarnished for other reasons than the mascot being unpopular.

penjelly · 7 months ago
it's a known problem with 2024 models, the article points to that. So while tesla may be aware of it, the public unconscious might not be (like the author wasn't), as its a new-ish, and frankly absurd problem to have.

Solid/particulate pollution from tires is definitely a problem, but in terms of carbon specifically isn't it many orders of magnitude less than the carbon from gas engines or electric power plants?
penjelly · 7 months ago
> These particles can include synthetic rubber, plastics, carbon black, and trace metals (like zinc)

you're correct. I mistakenly thought it was only carbon coming off the tires. So yeah, EVs have a significantly lower carbon output that ICE vehicles. My point still stands but thanks for the callout.

> tire wear is proportional to vehicle weight to the fourth power.

Does this mean that a bus that weighs 10 times as much as a small car will produce 10000 times as much tire dust? If it does, I'm not sure if investing in buses will reduce tire dust at all. A bus can replace a lot of cars, but 10000 is a stretch. We need more trains.

trams were popular in tons of places before, I understand they improved traffic significantly compared even to today, and they'd still have a positive effect now, I think. But most places shifted towards a car centric focus and we lost those.

And we need more lightweight cars , not heavier, since tire wear is proportional to vehicle weight to the fourth power. Ironically, CAFE regulations and EV incentives both did the opposite

EV/hybrid only "zones" in Europe are crazy to me because the electric cars leech more tire carbon into the air anyway. Some regulation seems intelligent on the surface, but the devil is in the details.

people talking about ad revenue... It feels more like a reputational play, ie: throw some free movies out with the WBD logo, more people recognize the brand strength of WBD, then subscribe to Max. Though the selection is small and the movies don't look very good at a glance..
