More likely that they used something like quillbot or grammarly for automatic paraphrasing.

TurnitIn's cheating detection tools have always been garbage - and I say that as an ex-academic who was 'forced' to use those tools extensively (the PDFs submitted by students are only visible in the Turnitin portal with the 'flags' to the right).

Even before the 'AI detection' tool (IMHO snake-oil) the features around copy-pasting/plagiarism were so bad I always ignored them. The tool would flag things like commonly used coverpage forms. That universities pay a fortune for those tools is an indictment of the industry.

The one student who got caught for plagiarism when I was a TA was busted by turnitin. Maybe the tool isn't perfect but it caught this student who had painstakingly replaced every single word in a copied paper with a synonym. I'm talking "perhaps the utility is not flawless, but the use of this utility allowed for the apprehension of a pupil who..." etc.

I was surprised at the level of effort

One of the things that struck me as weird after landing in the US - is how wasteful the lightning here is. If I was an autocratic ruler, I would definitely scaled it back a couple of times.

I would scale it back as an autocratic ruler even if hurt GDP. It would be nice to see more of the night sky

Does loss of value via quantitative easing count?

The guy doesn’t sound like he’s that good at game companies, still should probably continue though
papreclip · 4 years ago
maybe he's just tricking game devs into applying their work ethic to other product lines

Be extremely wary of Oracle free tiers.

They offered a free tier and forced me to choose a shape. I chose the smallest of the two “shapes” but it was apparently not free. This was not especially clear until I got my first bill (it was extortionate; like 60eur/mo for 1cpu/2g ram) so I stopped/removed the instance.

This did not prevent me from being billed the next month, or the next month. They charged me until my card expired- then they finally cancelled the account and I paid the last bill manually. They then added another 0.1SEK charge (which is not payable, as 1SEK is the lowest denomination of currency).

I still get extremely high quantities of A4 paper through the mail box, at one point it was 29 pages of the same invoice.

I could have done something wrong here, but there is a distinct dark pattern on sign up and there are definitely bugs in the billing system.

Caveat Emptor.

EDIT: in case someone thinks I am joking. This was one of the packs: https://imgur.com/0fbsR3E

I had the same experience with AWS ec2 free tier that ran out after a year and started billing me. They bill me $17/mo now even though the machine was shut down and AWS account was closed 2 months ago

From that same site, 90% net worth is ~1.25m. https://dqydj.com/net-worth-percentile-calculator-united-sta...

If you contribute 2k a month at 7% interest that would take you 23 years. A long time yes, but certainly achievable on a 100k salary. Of course I know the interest rate might not be that going forward, but the point still stands.

papreclip · 4 years ago
harder to make 100k 23 years ago than it is today. by the time you finish a 2k/mo journey you begin today, 1.25M will be no longer be the cutoff for top 10%

Reading the article I was suddenly reminded of this comment I once saved : whip up outrage -> increase alienation and segregation -> build up resentment that leads to violence -> violence used as a whip.

Those who are in power know they can use the disenfranchised as their whip.

The article correctly identifies imo that it’s paramount we need to start thinking inclusive when it comes to setting up society.

Or like that quote, a society is measured how they treat their poorest.

The worst part is the outrage part is downright addictive. Trying to get people who are plugged into this loop to take a step back and consider others' perspective is like taking their favorite toy away

For reddit, IMO the simplest things you can do to improve the experience is to force the old reddit design (old.reddit.com) when on desktop, and use any app except the official app when on mobile.
papreclip · 5 years ago
I use old.reddit on mobile as well. Personally I prefer panning & zooming on the desktop version of a site to the mobile design in general
