The difference being that you can ask a human to prove it and they'll actually discover the illusion in the process. They've asked the model to prove it and it has just doubled down on nonsense or invented a new spelling of the word. These are not even remotely comparable.

Indeed, we are able to ask counterfactuals in order to identify it as an illusion, even for novel cases. LLMs are a superb imitation of our combined knowledge, which is additionally curated by experts. It's a very useful tool, but isn't thinking or reasoning in the sense that humans do.

Zuck made him and offer that couldn't be refused. But neither salaries or hype or hope are what AI should be measured against. LLM based AI should be measured against previous technological revolutions, in terms of sustained real income growth and ideally real income growth per person.

Right now capital expenses are responsible for most of AI's economic impacts, as seen by the infrastructure spend contributing more to GDP than consumer spending this year.

One of the worst excesses of this admin has been the attack on science and mathematics, stemming from their deliberate ignorance of evidence. A setback for the researchers and a tragedy for the people that might benefit from their work, the nation and the world as a whole.

To quote the NYTimes:

“Despite the desperate humanitarian crisis, a survey conducted in May by the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University found that 64.5 percent of the Israeli public was not at all, or not very, concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.”

“About three-quarters of Israeli Jews thought that Israel's military planning should not take into account the suffering of the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza, or should do so only minimally, according to another recent survey by the Israel Democracy Institute, a nonpartisan research group in Jerusalem.”

The banality of evil on full display. These very same people will claim in the future that they were misled or did not understand the gravity of crimes being committed in Gaza and the West Bank.

This is already happening if you know where to look and it isn’t esoteric data. The share of retail in treasury buyers has been increasing for years. If the administration doesn’t reduce spending (it won’t since it can’t) yields will blow out, we had a taste of this a couple times in the past years. Watch 5.5% on the 10. Expect YCC. Possibly buy gold if you think of buying treasuries…

Gold was also inversely correlated to long term US interest rates, which no longer holds true. So, nations and large institutions already hold the opinion that inflation will be higher (>2%) for longer in the future. Maybe the target should be moved to ~3%, which is defacto the case.

This is the outcome of neoliberalism taken to its logical extreme, where capitals interests are prioritised over everything else.

Technology was expected by some to empower the citizens, enabling them to counteract negative outcomes - but in fact has allowed the powerful to shape opinions and politics to their perspective even more easily.

omnee commented on EU commissioner shocked by dangers of some goods sold by Shein and Temu   theguardian.com/business/... · Posted by u/Michelangelo11

I'm glad for any initiative that leads to less crap reaching the markets that is either dangerous or has a shelf life of a few months before breaking down. The EU as a whole will become even less competitive if we don't re-gain some level of quality awareness and place quality at the center of the things we consume and produce.

This should not be understood as anti-China but should apply to all products on the EU market. China has some well-respected quality-conscious consumer brands (e.g. Hifiman, Fenix Lights, DJI, Anker, Govee...) but it seems a lot of smaller companies there put easy revenue over any concerns for quality.

omnee · a month ago
I want to emphasise your latter point - I have a Lenovo work laptop, Fenix head torches and various other high quality Chinese products. Any company selling into the EU needs to meet the QC and regulatory requirements, and many well known Chinese brands already do so, and so their products naturally sell at a premium to the cheapest options. A little more thought in purchasing by buyers would go a long way in helping the commissions efforts to reduce harmful goods.
omnee commented on Preliminary report into Air India crash released   bbc.co.uk/news/live/cx20p... · Posted by u/cjr
omnee · a month ago
This report is outlining the known facts of the flight at present. The main one being the movement of the fuel switches to the off position did occur a few seconds after take-off, almost certainly by one of the pilots. And this was the primary cause of the crash. However, blame has not been apportioned and the reason for why is not known.

You can get rich by... having it

Sort of like gold I guess.

I have never figured out "lightning network", their "solution" for payments. (bitcoin payments are so impractical that they have a different, separate system to use for actual payments, that works completely differently.) Seems very convoluted. I need to pay a huge fee just to make a channel so I can receive anything? And there is something about liquidity? I implemented bitcoin stuff and still cannot figure lightning out.

bitcoin is mainly for buying it and looking at a chart.

omnee · 2 months ago
You can't get rich with gold. And haven't been able to for a long long time. It usually preserves wealth due to its long term real rate of return of around zero. But as BTC is new enough, the early owners have indeed become very rich.

Do yourself a flava and read the Manga. The movie ends before where the first volume ends, but the story goes in a completely different and much more interesting direction.
omnee · 2 months ago
Like others I want to recommend the manga. It's a masterpiece and in my opinion Miyazaki's Magnum Opus.
