The rollout has been good and well-planned, and definitely a long time in the making, but why is it whenever some user change is rolled out it is always to “improve user security”? Is it just a short hand at this point?
olkid · 4 years ago
I received the "Migration Complete" email and now minecraft.net login gives me this https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/login?error=InternalServerEr...

...the rollout is not that "good"

We absolutely should have a healthy fear and respect for nuclear power. I’m personally for it to provide a baseline load for other renewables.

But let’s not pretend like there are no risks anymore. Although in a theoretical setting we have reactor designs that are safe, in practice plants can be mismanaged and unexpected disasters can strike. People also thought Chernobyl and Fukushima were safe before they weren’t, and the price for getting it wrong is so high.

One thing I’d like to know is why there isn’t more research into thorium reactors, when I looked into some years ago it seemed like a much safer technology, so I was missing the reason why it wasn’t getting nearly as much funding or attention.

olkid · 5 years ago
Same. I learned about thorium reactors a few years back from Kirk Sorensen. Purportedly, thorium is safer, readily available, and produces less radioative waste. "Kirk currently serves as the President and Chief Technologist at Flibe Energy..."[1]

Being mainly a Linux CLI user(ie. no `undo') I'm perfectly fine with not searching the trash.

Don't need to own them, check your local library. Books delve deeper than blog posts or even series of them, without distraction.

+1 for without distraction

So here is a question: my girlfriend only uses FB on her laptop, and always logs out when she's done. I usually make fun of her for doing this.

But does this mean most of the time that there was no active access token and she is mostly safe? (Excluding the windows of time where she was actively using FB) Do I have to take back all of my teasing?

olkid · 7 years ago
Logging out when finished with an online service is good practice. You should do it too. (and don't make fun of her) :-)

Re: microfibers making it into water systems:

This is a con to synthetic fibers that I hadn't been considering before. Recently I learned that cotton has a pretty high environmental footprint (land use, highest pesticide use of any crop, high water consumption) [1], and thus started moving some of my clothing purchases toward polyester-blends (trades the cons of cotton for petrochemical and energy use).

Does anyone have a good grasp on the total environmental impact of these options, considering the entire chain (mining/extraction/cultivation -> disposal/environmental release)?

I wonder why hemp fiber didn't get compared independently. From a quick internet search: it is one fiber used in Tencel blend. I think hemp scores better on land usage, but not necessarily in the other categories. Is that your take?

But surely all the evidence suggests that it is unrealistic, given that reality shows us over and over that people don't read these boxes before checking?

Do you read the entirety of every twenty page EULA before using a new app?

olkid · 8 years ago
Actually, I do(almost always). But, that leads to it's own set of issues. My banking session timed out before I finished reading it. Another service I've been using for over 10 years just added new legal that I don't agree to... now what? That service has a network effect... so, I have to leave? drat! Truth is, most online services ask for more than I am willing to concede. That is an issue.

You're just like every other entry level developer in the industry then. The only thing that is setting you apart is the conviction. Yes it will be harder, but with the items you just specified, everyone else is dealing with too. Get a portfolio (make one), get references (find some), and don't let your family starve. Take any job you can to make money while always looking for that better one, working on the references and portfolio. This is no different advice than what I'd tell any other developer starting out.
olkid · 8 years ago
I fully concur. Find your first reference today(mayhaps, someone from your parish).

For that I would need references (I have none), a good portfolio (I have none), or the ability to start off making almost no money (my family would starve).
olkid · 8 years ago
Most of the project work I have secured has been based on communicating my abilities while meeting with the hiring party. I'm sure it would be different for a designer, but I have never shown a portfolio. I agree with others, go for small companies, gigs, and sell yourself in the meeting.

I think 99% is low balling it. Also, not all of the remainder could actually set one up either.

So, I am part of the 1%! Gosh, I didn't even know...
