CloudFlare are going to tax the internet like Apple and Google tax smartphones.

Ugh.

On the one hand, I don't like AI bots consuming our traffic to build their proprietary products that they one day hope to put us out of business with.

On the other hand, nobody asked Cloudflare to be the unelected leader of the internet. And I'm sure their policing and taxing will end here...

God damnit, Internet. Can't we have nice open things? Every day in tech is starting to feel like geopolitical Game of Thrones. Kingdoms, winning wars, peasants...

holdon, I own domain (with say Let's Encrypt certs), I have my own keys for signing WebBotAuth tokens, I host public cert at my domain...

where does CloudFlare come as a gatekeeper? what do they have to do with me sining my requests and my tokens? am I missing something?

Unfortunately you can only work here up to 6 months as a digital nomad and it's not residency, it's basically just an extended tourist visa.

Portugal's digital nomad visa seems good but their immigration system is apparently extremely dysfunctional.

Hong Kong has good one right now with TTPS

China will be opening new visa track for tech in October, must be interseting to see

Japan last year had HSP visa, which was a good deal (PR in 1 year + no Japanese language requirement). fastest permanent immigration track I ever seen

The issues around H1B visas are ruining American work culture and have been for some time. TBH, it’s already captured and I think it’s too late to fix it

get visa in countries that allow remote work. Portugal, Thailand, China now issue good vias that let you work for a company anywhere in the world and stay many years in the country, or start your own business.

don't let your employer keep you and your family hostage with your legal status

The sad part in all of this is that Microsoft likely had no policy that required him to work this much and yet the Microsoft cultural pressure combined with H1B unknowns drove him to not take care of himself and apply immense amounts of undue pressure. Managers need to be aware of this and question why their employees feel the need to work this much. Either hire more or coach the employees not to burn out.

> H1B unknowns

this. most countries have similar policies. been there, seen so many others going through this in UK, USA, Japan, Korea, Singapore. it really damages your life.

to everyone, check other countries (Portugal, Thailand, Japan) that give you residency for years and allow to work remotely

don't let your employer hold you and your family a hostage with your legal status

I watch the movie and it's over in an hour. I use this app and I can improve my workflow for a year. Which one is worth it?

say I start charging you 40 USD for clothes you have bought from someone else, you are washing yourself, reparing, and other people made, using their own tools and materials. I did close to nothing, and yet "you will be wearing it for a year". great, but that does not mean there is no ripoff from my part. I have close to nothing to do with your clothes, even if they are obviously useful to you for next year.

same story here. marginal contribution is too low compared to price

you can pay for it 1000 USD too, nobody stops you

but that does not mean it is "worth it". as in, marginal contribution and work people did to make it happen. banana duck-taped to a wall, same story.
