> I can vote for a politician to fix the government services. And the local politicians know that keeping the government running well enough is needed to be re-elected

That is one issue among several reasons to pick a politician. Also politicians have limited powers to fire non-performers which gets bogged down in the court system to fire just one person.

> I have zero leverage on AT&T.

People can switch away easier from companies, it happens all the time, companies lose and gain customers all the time. Bad or mediocre service has killed many companies, the effect is far greater than on governments because they get to fund themselves from you even if you don't like or want them. Govt is the ultimate monopoly.

How do you switch away from a company that has a monopoly in your area?

It's definitely not. I use mac pro for work and it chugs around 16GiB (out of 64) of RAM on IDLE! It also has the worst keyboard I have ever used with a crazy big trackpad which I absolutely hate
saagarjha · 10 hours ago
I don't think you understand how memory accounting works on modern OSes? When the machine is idling, it will have a bunch of stuff in RAM because why wouldn't it?

I can't figure out how to set a shortcut that moves the current window to my other monitor. Always have to go into the toolbar to do it.

Edit: And oh! Why do I constantly have to (painfully manually) maximize windows. Preview is constantly choosing a different size, for example. Why is this not remembered.

I can't recall the last time an application in linux forgot its size after restarting.

saagarjha · 10 hours ago
Can you not assign a shortcut to that item?

I have a modest front and back yard in the "hot" part of the Bay Area. Summer months I'm pouring 5000 gallons a week to keep it moderately brown. It's insane.
saagarjha · 11 hours ago
Why keep it, then?

Maybe I'm just venting but you can probably eject Docker from this setup. If your dependencies are pretty well-defined then you don't really need a base image; just install Caddy and let uv handle the Python dependencies. Among us on Hacker News you'd think that there's a bunch of Docker hate but I really think that you don't need it if your dependencies are really simple and you don't need a specific version of things.

I don’t think the dead guy will be in the courtroom.

Clever try though.

Someone who read your car's manual might, though.

Do you happen to know if that one is hiring for anything at the moment? Left to solve problems at that pace, I'm pretty sure I could do some great things for them.

Most remote work gigs are basically this.

I've never done official pair programming, but I get frustrated when I'm not on the keyboard as I find others think slower.

I find that working with people who are smarter than I am helps a lot with this.

This is wrong. Malware authors put in a lot more work to make their software look legitimate, even including valid version information and digital signatures.
saagarjha · 15 hours ago
Hmm, but if I was a malware author and legitimate software couldn't bother to put in version information maybe I should also not do that so I can blend in better.
