Discord is just absolutely worthless for this. Any question that gets asked gets buried in days if not hours. It pretty much guarantees the same basic garbage gets repeated over and over and over forever. Basically the exact opposite of stack overflow.
natebc · 17 hours ago
Inevitably too you'll get someone scolding you to "check the pins" which you then do and get introduced to that hellish nightmare.

Discord is great for chatting with your friends, gaming, etc. but man it's a horrible knowledge repository.

Install earlyoom or one of its near-equivalents. That mostly solves the problem of it freezing up the system for long periods of time.

I haven't personally seen the OOM killer kill unproductively - usually it kills either a runaway culprit or something that will actually free up enough space to help.

For your "even for systems with half a terabyte of RAM", it is logical that the larger the system, the worse this behaviour is, because when things go sideways there is a lot more stuff to sort out and that takes longer. My work server has 1.5TB of RAM, and an OOM event before I installed earlyoom was not pretty at all.

it's anecdata but I've had the linux OOM Killer take out OVS (Open Virtual Switch) on a kubernetes node several times.

Made me really not mind having a little swap space setup just in case.

The penalty is the work of migrating away and redoing any integration work on a month's notice. That might seem trivial to a small deployment, but I know some people that use these images everywhere, including in places that aren't immediately obvious.
natebc · 4 days ago
Not to mention a lot of people that are going do be doing this work are the same people also spending the year swapping out hypervisors which is also no small task.

Maybe it's just me?

Half-Life Alyx, Dota 2, Steam Deck, Index, Proton, CS:GO (released same year as this handbook), and not to mention still dominating with Steam despite the competiton spending hundreds of millions of dollars to not even make a dip in their marketshare.

You could play Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic, which has no zones at all. And apparently you start with apartment blocks, not single–family housing. And if you want sidewalks, you have to place them. All of them, individually. I haven’t played it (or CS2) yet, but I’ve been considering it.
natebc · 17 days ago
Workers and Resources is fantastic!

You even have to lay sewer lines with an appropriate gradient and/or place lift stations to get it to the treatment plant.

Also: it has one of the best soundtracks ... of anything anywhere of all time.

This episode of The West Wing was exactly what came to my mind when reading the headline.

"But you can't do that." "Why not?" "Because it's freaking me out."

Such an entertaining show.

Why is “computer” not pluralised in the page title?

I thought it was a mistake in the post; but it’s the same on the page.

natebc · 20 days ago
perhaps a German=>English phrasing thing? the editor of that site is German.

Frankly I'll take it over artificially sandblasted translation via someGPT.
