Most women who are looking to date are on Tinder. No, your grandma isn’t on there. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make.

I have to comment that I think women who want to date go to tinder as a very last resort and don’t expect a long term relationship there. For serious relationships we tend to go to okcupid and bumble as they are wayyy less creepy apps. At least where I live tinder is known as the one night stand app.

I think the term 'coddling ' is not the best. I grew up during the 90's in a hyper-controled environment by a macho dad and a passive mom. I was told to not become an artist, to not travel when I am young (waste of time), to learn how to drive a car, to get a job, get a degree, all that jazz. The thing is, at 32, I still have no sense of purpose in life.

When all the goals are chosen for you, it does not matter if you were over-protected or not. You cannot build true self esteem and confidence if you don't succeed and/or fail at a dream of your choice. There is no point learning to drive a car if you do not know where you want to go, to earn money if you don't know what you want to buy, and to get into a career if you have no sense of purpose.

Videogames are addictive not only because they are fun, they provide you with a goal and 'achievements'. In my humble opinion, sex for the sake of sex (real or porn), promotions for the sake of promotions or else are all caused by the same emotional male problem ; the inability to feel emotions and learn from them what is truly important for yourself. The % of young men in the labour force is just a symptom of that.

I agree with your sentiment except for the « men unable to feel » thing. Emotions and sentiments are a fundamentally human thing and men feel too. However there is a social pressure on men to not show emotions and sentiments. We fight patriarchy so that women are less pressured into being fragile and pretty housewives but we should also fight it so that men are less pressured to be emotionless hardworking robots who have to provide for their family.

> Did any one of these 10 IP addresses view the article in the time period. Much more specific and likely easier to justify.

It is, but it also leaks information. Now people know you're looking at those IP addresses. If you were going to leak that, a major news outlet is probably not the place you want it to leak to.

You might be right and it might be an easy cover for a fishing expedition, but it doesn't seem inherently malicious on its face.

Maybe a technique like « give us the IPs that start with xxxxx » be a compromise between the two?

> Having people call you ugly all day is probably one of the worst parts of Instagram.

That’s not at all typical for Instagram. In fact, anyone being called “ugly” would do well to block whoever is making those comments, which is very easy on the platform.

> Hacker News isn't really a social media site since there's no concept of followers or friends here.

Hacker News is absolutely a social media. The comments section is all about social discussion and we have upvotes and downvotes.

You may like it more than other forms of social media because it lacks pictures, allows usernames instead of real names, and replaces likes with upvotes (and downvotes, arguably more toxic than likes). However, it’s still social media.

I disagree with the part on the ugly comments. It is very typical and blocking every single nasty comment on your appearance can be a mentally taxing effort that you can’t quite put under a « just block them off it’s easy » assertion.

Well, there's always the option of just demolishing the ship and its cargo, getting everything out of the canal without worrying about whether any of it survives the process.

That would still be expensive, but is it more expensive than blocking the canal?

nashalo_nighly · 5 years ago
Before destroying the ship you would need to pump out all the fuel which can take a very long time in itself

Would that level of salinity be harmful once it reaches the sea?
nashalo_nighly · 5 years ago
Yes since the salinity transfer from the canal into the Mediterranean Sea is already enough to make species from the Red Sea colonize the east Mediterranean. The Aswan dam reduced further the amount of freshwater coming to the area. So I would guess adding more salt wouldn’t be too good for the eastern Mediterranean.

> Why use a gendered pronoun here? It’s a bit unfair that the only non-specific gendered pronoun relates to a bad programming practice.

Spoiler alert, but making mistakes isn't just a male issue. Real representation means taking the bad with the good.

nashalo_nighly · 5 years ago
I agree. Women also code, which means we also make mistakes.

Equality means no mercy

They would probably be better off just giving the inmates 250k a pop and asking them to stay out of trouble.

A major epiphany for me was realizing that when someone is talking about their problems they don’t necessarily want / need to hear solutions.

When a solution pops don’t say it until the person stops talking or asks « what would you do ». It worked for me well to improve my listening skills.

Extremely high barrier to entry + (necessary) complex regulatory structure = industry with fewer players.

And in that situation, you've basically got breeding grounds for cartels and price-fixing. Even if not all the players hold the line, prices will take a long time to come down rather than how quickly they would in a high-competition market.

Heck look at how long it took carriers to stop charging insane money for SMS! It did eventually happen, but over the course of years as each carrier in turn put through small incremental price reductions to show growth for shareholders.

nashalo_nighly · 5 years ago
In a lot of countries there are even more regulations and yet the US pricing seems quite uniquely high
