Just this past friday their fully automated CI devops whatever deployed an old major version to some parts of their infrastructure, the entire website was 500 for an hour and git pushes were barking up Ruby stacktraces.

All the more reason to host your own instance! However, I understand if others prefer not to go this route and thus use an alternative version control solution.

Does the new round going to help with reliability problems? I use GitHub ~90% of time and I can't recall any downtime, while for GitLab it's very often to see it being unavailable.

I find the service great but it's really frustrating to see it being down so often.

I haven't experienced any downtime with their public service - which I think is great for hosting private repos (as others have mentioned). I actually prefer it to bitbucket.

In other professional experiences, hosting our own instances of Gitlab was a great solution. Setup/updates were easy and we had the piece of mind knowing that we were in control of the maintaining uptime. I was very impressed by how simple it was to their implement CI service as well.

My current employer doesn't use Slack and instead uses XMPP and a web front-end called "Movim". I can tell you right away, it is shit. I'd gladly pay 10k/year for the privilege of using Slack, so please don't bash on it until you realise how bad the alternatives are.

Ever checked out Rocket Chat? Open source solution that is extremely similar to Slack and you can self host.

I have a settled on Toggl for time tracking and Zoho Books for invoicing. Toggl supports csv export and Zoho Books has an import feature that makes getting data from one to the next fairly simple, with the help of a simple script I wrote to transform the data (https://github.com/joshrickert/toggl-zoho-books-timesheet-co...).

I did a pretty exhaustive search when I set out to solve this problem a couple years ago, and ended up with a considerable amount of research that I summarized on my blog (https://joshrickert.com/blog/invoicing-apps-for-freelancers/).

Thanks for the suggestions and write up - very insightful.

This looks amazing - much better than most of the comparable services I've looked into. Going to give it a shot - thanks!

Chris Sacca's background story is little known and he talks about it at length with Jason Calacanis. The part about him losing millions while still at university is as shocking as his recovery from the setback is amazing. Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VOQnK7O2To

His Foundation episode with Kevin Rose is pretty good as well.

You'll have to go for the technology that's hot right now.

I guess this week it's React, but some say that Vue may surpass it in terms of popularity by next Wednesday.

In all seriousness though: learn vanilla js and you'll be fine.

n_coats commented on Telecommunications company Avaya files for bankruptcy   reuters.com/article/us-av... · Posted by u/doppp

I have been working at avaya for the last couple years and I have been scratching my head trying to understand how this company works and how it got into this situation. On one hand its a company thats hasn't made a profit in 10 years but on the other it takes in a billion every quarter. When you look at the numbers it turns out it is paying tens of millions to service the interest on its massive debt... it would be quite profitable if it was not for this. So where did the debt come from? Most of it seems to have come from the leveraged buyout it underwent 10 years back. So now they file for chapter 11 bankruptcy but who is getting burned here? Anyone who bought an avaya bond will lose out but what about the private equity company that owns the place? The way the company was allowed to grow its debt seems like they just didnt care as if it wasnt going to hurt them when bankruptcy finally beckons.

As striking as it is for a company to take in a billion every quarter and still fail to make a profit, it is all to common in the telco space. I know from experience at one of the big 4 wireless carriers in the US. The inefficient mismanagement and spending decisions, specifically related to operations were astounding.

I started a company (shameless plug: fifthsignal.com) that makes software to fix a lot of the inefficiencies we saw. One of our biggest concerns was whether or not other carriers operated as poorly as what we had experienced. After talking with several carriers outside of the US, it would seem that most are actually worse off.

I believe someone in this thread made a comment towards the "legacy" telco space. Based on my experience, I would say it's a "dinosaur" industry that has seen very little delivered innovation in recent times.

*Most of my experience relates to operations/OSS solutions, with very little insight into telco BSS space.

The one thing we learned with the first one is that it takes a tribe to deal with a newborn: I simply don't understand America's desire to go it alone with newborns. I've got a list of grandparents, siblings and other assorted people coming through and staying with us for the first six months after her arrival.

After that, we're seriously considering splurging on a nanny... I like to think of it as an investment in my sanity.

n_coats · 9 years ago
My first child is three weeks old and I have a very similar support group in place. Yet even with all the help, I too, am strongly considering a nanny - I feel the thought alone is an indication that I've already lost my sanity haha
