This is bizarre. I came into this thread to make this exact same comment - I play 2048 religiously during takeoff, turbulence, and sometimes landing. It works really well, though if you were to watch a replay of my game, you could tell when turbulence hits because I start making faster and less logical moves :)

Very bizarre, as I also found it helped with this! I was only a First Officer at the time, but even as a Captain today I find playing 2048 during take off and landing really helps.

What I just can’t understand is why pokemon go is not made into a full-blown game? Like, it literally could be the most popular game ever, if only they would take the logic out of one of the nintendo games, and implemented it for pokemon go. It is popular enough as is, but it would literally be a killer combo, and they already have all the logic/datatables/animations/license in place. It might hurt the sales of nintendo hardware, but you would target at least an order of magnitude more customers with it. Add some pay-to-win elements (e.g. full restore could also be bought with real money), but also make them drop, but rarely in the game and you will have insane profits.

But to just throw balls at pokemons, is just a disgrace to the very well made original games.

Too much control and influence for an American company I expect.

Japanese companies have some behaviour that may seem odd, naive or lacking the best of capitalism, but they are what they are.

Nintendo regularly get this sort of criticism.

The game is also a data collection tool for Niantic, rather that to be a great game. Someone would have to give up control to change it all.

In the UK we do this as part of status negotiation - the second question anyone asks (after whats your name?) is what do you do?

Then we can decide whether we are above or below the other person in the status hierarchy, which is roughly as follows:

  - Architect
  - Artist/Designer/Creative
  - Lawyer/Doctor/Teacher
  - Executive/Manager
  - ...
  - ...
  - Bar staff
  - Engineer
  - Software Engineer
  - Waiter
  - Driver
  - Cleaner

I watched the full video. It was long but very informative. The humor at times made up for the length and the presenter showed a lot of deep knowledge that most people won't have. My biggest gripe is that they just didn't try replacing the RAM sticks in the first place. I get that they wanted to do a root cause analysis, but geez the time and patience they had to do all those memory tests. No wonder they did a video about it, cause otherwise that lost time would have been painful. I was baffled as well that dd and ddrescue work differently in how they utilize the RAM. Caught me offguard.

Onto the discussion of ECC RAM. In a perfect world, all memory would be ECC... but try finding some high performance 16GB sticks of ECC DDR4 RAM like what you'll see on gaming computers. I don't even think they make anything comparable in terms of speed and definitely not costs. I guess you don't really know that you needed ECC until it's too late.

> " I guess you don't really know that you needed ECC until it's too late."

I spent many years on hardware consultation and was amazed at the all the times I had to explain it was just a what if insurance like any other things their business was mitigating against. Sometimes they'd even decided they needed to save costs in non-ecc ram when it was $4 a gb in difference, or (during the FB-DIMM era) there wasn't even an option to avoid it.

Never really understood the resistance towards it.

Maybe the lack of evidence before the Google study and people thinking RAM manufacturers were trying to rip them off or something.

The "never had a problem so why would I need" it attitude with no way to know if an issue was caused by a bit flip was most baffling.

Tumblr still exists?

Automattic purchased them for $3m 3 years ago. Matt Mullenweg has a vision for it, but obviously we've not seen a huge resurgence in it yet.

They did announce the are allowing non-pornographic nude images back last week.

What I don't get is why Snap never tried to build a good product around that and give creators (uhmm) a good way to monetize their profiles. This seems like such an obvious thing to do to me. Why would you give up on that usage and allow it to move to OnlyFans and other platforms if you already have it? And even more, penalize your audience for such practice. And same question to Instagram team (I left the company a while back so don't know the current thinking). If anybody with insider knowledge can comment even top-level, would be much appreciated.
morelikeborelax · 4 years ago
Because they are a public company and institutional shareholders wouldn't let them.

Before going public they wouldn't have been able to pass it by VCs already invested or raise any more capital. OnlyFans has this problem.

Even if they had offered it early they would have struggled the same way OnlyFans did recently over payments, and with no way to police it on their technology probably would have been embattled with media and public perception way worse.

Banks, investors and other companies don't want to deal with Pornography and sex workers despite the massive proliferation online.

They wouldn't have been able to have all their partnerships, generate revenue from other sources or have apps either.

I am pretty sure Pandemic Legacy, an RPGish version of Pandemic, was at the top of the list a few years ago.

tootie · 4 years ago
Not really. I live in NYC and my company has an office in NYC and still never go in and don't care if I ever do. We're likely going to retain a space once our lease is up, but it's going to be modeled very differently. Our business has some physical co-location requirements for certain aspects, but no one doing tech work needs to do anything beyond meetings. And we are all 100% comfortable doing them over video. If we want a rallying spot for once or twice a year jamborees, we could do it at a hotel or a much smaller permanent space. There's no reason Google would need to pay $2B unless they were rejecting remote work.
morelikeborelax · 4 years ago
Ah yes your anecdotal experience clearly means one of the largest companies in the world is rejecting remote work by buying an office they already lease.

Maybe this isn't ideal for the homepage

> Okay Retards, I will make this long because apparently you Apes seem to like long posts, even when a YOLO opportunity like this

But what do I know, I'm just a triggered liberal.

Edit: I understand how they use the "r" word on WSB as it's been in the mainstream news for a year. I'm saying that it reflects poorly on a business, signaling that it failed due diligence, on there homepage of all places.

morelikeborelax · 4 years ago
I've been using WSB and what has come since for many years as additional sources of DD; and it reads like "Howdy do fellow kids" type nonsense from someone who isn't part of the community.

The Ape stuff is cringe, because that moniker is adopted for those who can't read/can only buy and hold stock and is purely focused on GME anyway.

This could be a great resource and it doesn't need to be directed to people playing up ridiculous persona's on reddit when the reality is those who will read this are intelligent investors.
